Leafs get a young forward with size and upside who doesn't appear to be fitting in with the Oilers plans for their forward group, and less so now that they'll likely pick Yakupov with the 1st overall. Oilers gain a defenceman who walks into their top 4 with upside, while giving up a player who hasn't been able to stick with the big club.
MSP has more value to the Oilers then Franson - Franson is a 3rd pairing guy that can play on the PP. MSP has top 6 potential and is 4 years younger then Franson so he has time to develop his scoring touch and consistency.
If Paajarvi could ever get some fire to his game and drive the net instead of driving wide or letting a wrister go from the top of the circle, he will be a 30-30 guy with good defensive play. Just too much potential to let him go now, and we have more than enough talent up front to take the risk that he doesn't pan out rather than trade him for 5 cents on the dollar right now.
the thing is, with the Oilers acquiring Nick Schultz this year, and Colton Tuebert pretty well ready to step in next year (we'll see), and Theo Peckham still taking up space, the Oil just don't need Cody Franson or for that matter, Luke Schenn. both are good d-men, but we need a top pairing guy.

Why does everyone think Edmonton is getting him? Did he say something?
