Taking care of your playoff voice

OK, part of the upside of having home ice is we are widely acknowledged to be the loudest, most intense barn in the playoffs.

But, if this turns out to be what we hope it will be, we need to be able to have our voices at playoff readiness and keep them there for two months.

So here are a few tips from Dr Voldemort...*

1. Hydration. Keep the throat lubricated, preferably with non-alcoholic beverages. I know this is impossible for many so in lieu of abstinence try to alternate a bottle or glass of water with each alcoholic beverage

2. Warm Ups. Stretching is essential prior to physical activity and the vocal muscles are no different. Try humming the anthem or counting to twenty a few times before the game gets going

3. Technique. Hardest thing to do in the heat of the moment but try to get your belly into the big cheers with a big deep breath and contracting your abs rather than trying to do it all with your throat.

4. Rest/Recovery. After the game(or the next day if you go out partying after) guzzle clear liquids, talk only when necessary, and speak with no strain. If someone cant hear you, make them come closer rather than trying to shout. Worst thing you can do is reaggravate the next day.

5. Avoid Irritants. Smoking/dipping can ruin your playoff voice, and so can acid reflux. Suck it up and put on some nicotine patches or chew nicotine gum... its the playoffs dammit, man up! Also if you have trouble with heartburn start taking something like Prilosec OTC or Prevacid, ASAP(unless of course your doctor has advised you not to or you are already on a medicine for reflux.)

And you all have to be extra loud for those of us that can't be there!

Agreed. I want to hear the Bridge from my back patio in Atlanta.

Thanks Doc. But I'm throwing caution to the wind tonight since I'll miss game two. Gives me the weekend to get my voice back and be ready if game five is necessary.

If I alternate every drink with a bottle of water I'll be a case of water and 20 trips the bathroom down by the time the game is over

Kidding. Won't be drinking tonight or Friday.

Get a teenager. They provide year round practice at yelling constantly.

Does beating up a Wings fan and drinking their blood count as 'fluids?'

Haha, but don't be too much of an ass to DET fans. I like our reputation as friendly but fervent fans.

However, in my experience, it is typically other fans starting it with us. The last fight I saw between a Preds fan and another fan was surprisingly in the bathroom at the RBC Center in Raleigh haha. Canes are the last team I would think there would be any animosity between.

True, but who has time to do the job properly nowadays? This is why it's good to have folks you can depend on.

Serious note, bring ear plugs. The Bridge can reach db levels of 108+ I have hearing loss in my left ear because of the 303. Be careful. they make wonderful earplugs in the gold color and you should get something with a 20 or more rating.

Segue:

Does making Wing fans scream in horror count as making this a loud and intimidating place?

Perhaps we can make some human sacrifices at center ice. The chilled blood should mix well with...Bloody Marys.

Throat very sore today.

I will be practicing Steps 1 and 4 today.

Should I gargle saltwater or something? I'm sure there's some old wives tale or home remedy....possibly good luck for game 2?

Little honey in warm water always helps me.

I'm too cool to show emotion. At most I will clap with a little ta-ta and roll my eyes when the other team scores.

This is if my team wins the cup.
