Considering the rest of his signing bonus is paid July 1st, they'll probably hang onto him through then at least if they are in the market to move him. That would make his cap hit more palatable to someone else since over 1/3rd of his entire deal would be paid out.

Keep him for at least another year... There may be a big roster shake up on the horizon and maybe new linemates will spark something. No sense in wasting a first round pick.
Wow, the whole team pretty much sucked. It wasn't Leino's fault.
He spent the entire year switching positions and linemates, and settled in fine towards the end of the year playing with Pomminvile. I wouldn't trade him now. I'd like to see him perform under a new coach forst, one with a clue how to impliment a system and stick with it, as well as lines.
This bury him in the AHL talk is pretty ridiculous. Granted, the goals weren't there. I understand that. 8 goals is not worth $4.5m. But from when he returned from his injury until the last game, I would make an argument he was one of our better forwards. 21-63-82 takes the cake for sure, but Pommers and Leino were certainly better than Roy, Vanek, etc. His puck control abilities in the offensive zone opened up so many opportunities and his D-zone coverage was vastly improved from the beginning of the year.
Yes the points need to increase, but he doesn't deserve to be buried. And let's not forget, the owners and players both have latched on to the amnesty clause in the NBA's new CBA, which allows for one player to be bought out without any cap consequences for the length of that contract. He'd be our choice for that if anything.

You're trying to hard to defend the guy. He was the worst, most redundant forward on the Sabres by far, and that includes Brad Boyes. Leino can't PK, play on the PP, doesn't score. The only thing he was good at was puck possession, which very rarely resulted in anything positive. Boyes finishe with the same amount of goals and only 2 less points even though Leino played on a top 6 line all year and Boyes was stuck in a 4th line role. If Leino made less than $1 million, he would still be taking up a roster spot for somebody that could add another element. There is virtually nothing redeeming about having Ville Leino on the roster.
Can anyone explain me why people always package up
a 1st rounder plus a garbage player ?????????
What is it supposed to do ???? lower the 1st rounder ??? raise the player value ???
its a case of "we will give you this if you take his contract"

not a bad idea at all. I would say the Sabres/Flames deal set a precedent of valuing a mid-2nd rounder at $3 million, using that as a benchmark I would say a late 1st (21st to 30th) would be worth maybe $5-7 million (basically twice as valuable) which is where I expect the Preds pick to be.
Leino as of July 1st is owed $17 million. I just can't see a team agreeing to take Leino with so much owed still. I know if the Flames talked to the Sabres about it I would want both Sabres 1st rounders this year to consider taking that contract, and I think we would both agree that the Sabres giving up a pair of 1st round picks to dump Leino would be retarded.

Excellent point, plus it could have just been a really bad year. Players bounce back.

I'm not sure whats confusing about it, you offer a carrot to entice someone into accepting something they wouldn't accept for free. Offer a big enough carrot and someone will eventually bite.
Leino playmaked and played good PP on the flyers. He could be a 60-point player a good year with stabile linemates through the year. But even what he has potential to be isn't worth 4.5 million for 6 years, so I don't get what the hell Buffalo were doing. 3 million for 6 years would probably've been way more than the second highest bid? I mean 4.5M I can't see anyone offered him for more than 1 maybe 2 years.
Or were there some kind of bidding war?
If there weren't, what kind of agent does Leino have?

Of course there were a bidding war. Leino was top-3 free agent at the time.
Buffalo isn't going to trade Leino. He's not as bad as everyone makes him seem. He's a 40-50 point 2nd/3rd line winger. We overpaid by maybe a million or so. He struggled the 1st year of his UFA contract. So did almost everyone on the Sabres.

He has scored 40+ points ONCE.His career PPG is .445, which comes out to 36.5 points a season. No way should he ever be referred to as a 50 point winger. He can't PK, he doesn't hit whatsoever and all he does is skate around with one hand on his stick. He isn't fast, he is just mediocre across the board. He's overpaid by about 2+ million...I wouldn't pay him 2.5, unfortunately Regier overpaid for him and it pretty much eliminates us as being UFA buyers this off-season.
