Im assuming that most are going to not like this, but I think it could be beneficial for BOTH teams. I'd also like to mention, I AM A LEAFS FAN.. SO NO BIAS..
To Columbus:
2012 1st round pick (8th overall)
Eric Staal
Columbus needs all the help they can get.. Staal is proven to be a great player, I just think a change would do him good. Put him on a line with Nash, they could be great together!! And with the 8th pick, they could pick up a quality defender in either Trouba, Reinhart, or maybe Ceci.
Carolina gets a young center with potential, and while he isn't as good as Staal, the addition of 2nd overall could be big for them. Murray would be a great player for them, and they could pick up another decent player with the 2nd rounder, or even pair it with another pick/player for a mid-late 1st.
1.) Carolina is not going to trade Staal in the near future. In fact, we are going to try to find a very good winger via Trade/UFA this summer to play with him. I think it would be much more likely that Nash would be traded to Carolina to play with Staal.
2.) This is a terrible offer. How does this improve Carolina at all? We are already a weak team down the middle. Trading a PROVEN top-tier center for draft picks and potential will just set us back.
The only proposal between Carolina and Columbus should be what would it take to get Rick Nash to Carolina.
So...?

Ya its pretty bad mate. Maybe use the Edit button to make it better?
Not really sure it can be made better. Rutherford in his end of season press conference said a couple of noteworthy things.
1) He said is offseason priority is to find top line talent to player WITH Staal.
2) Said when the team stunk in November and the MEDIA kept asking if he was going to trade Staal or Ward, he said "it was the most foolish thing I ever heard. Did they think we weren't going to try and have a team next year?"
Picks and prospects won't get it done IMO and other than Nash (which doesn't help Carolina losing Staal for Nash) or maybe JJ+ in a package (and we know that JJ to Carolina ain't happening). Really can't see how the deal could be made better and still be even remotely realistic.

How does that make any sense to Carolina - they have a surfeit of young talent that is struggling to make an impact as it is, much less trading away the face of the franchise (in a fickle market)? And how would you convince Staal to waive his NTC to make this happen?
If Nash is going to Carolina (just daydreaming) - how does this happen without including Skinner and Faulk? Or Ward, for that matter.
Carolina's first, Dalpe (Ohio State product), Mike Murphy/Matt Mahalak, Salary dump
for
Nash
Any framework regarding a Nash deal likely will involve a first rounder, good forward (be it a prospect or a roster player), and a goalie of some sort.
Is Carolina's 2012 first-round pick, Zac Dalpe or Ryan Murphy (depending on Columbus' need) and Jussi Jokinen a start? If Columbus is looking for a goaltender in return, I would recommend Justin Peters over any other Hurricane as he is the most NHL-ready and could step in and play next year if needed.
Other pieces that could possibly be on the table from the Hurricanes are Zach Boychuk, Jamie McBain and Joni Pitkanen.

Keep in mind the reported offer from NYR that Howson declined. Here is something I pulled from a CBJ poster who's followed the Nash situation - this was in another thread.
Quote:
From New York Howson asked for either Ryan McDonagh or Michael Del Zotto, Derek Stepan or Carl Hagelin, Chris Kreider and Brandon Dubinsky and the Rangers 1st in 2012.
The Rangers offered Dubinsky, Tim Erixon, 2011 first-rounder J.T. Miller, 2010 second-rounder Christian Thomas and their 2012 1st.
David Poile told NHL Live he made a major offer for Nash. Nashville is supposed to have offered Anders Lindback, Colin Wilson, Ryan Ellis, Teemu Laakso and their 2012 1st.
In San Jose's case Howson wanted 4 major assets including Logan Couture. San Jose would not give up Couture.
We don't know what San Jose and Toronto offered. The rumor is the Rangers offer was not the best one received. Supposedly, the Sharks offered more.

From the deals that you put in your original post. I'm not sure why Howson didn't take a harder look at the Nashville deal, if that was what was offered. I too would love to know what San Jose offered. Imagine if Howson was able to pull off both deals for Carter and Nash. His return would have been Jack Johnson, 3 first round picks and numerous top prospects. That said, the offseason will hold people's interest to see what is done.

Cam Ward might be interesting if he was still the Superman that won the Cup. He's still a quality goaltender and definitely an improvement over Mason, but not sure if we'd need to deal Nash to get him.
