Red-shirted refers to college players being on the roster but not playing so as not to use up a year of their egibility. In this case it means he's be in charge of the clipboard for the season then he'd have a full run at a roster position next season. They've brought many kids along this way over the years.
"In 2005, Masoli was incarcerated for three months at the Hillcrest Juvenile Hall in San Mateo, CA, for participating in a robbery. Members of his high school football team were also involved.
On the morning of January 24, 2010, a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house returned home and witnessed Masoli and teammate Garrett Embry leaving an area of the house near his room. When he realized a projector and two laptop computers were missing he took chase. The victim chased down Embry, who returned the projector and subsequently reported the incident to Eugene police. Police interviewed Masoli the next day, where he said he was not at the fraternity house. On March 12, 2010, Masoli pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary before Lane County Circuit Judge Maurice Merten, who sentenced Masoli to one year probation and 140 hours of community service. As part of the plea agreement, this charge was later reduced to a misdemeanor. Oregon head coach Chip Kelly immediately suspended Masoli for the 2010 football season, his senior year, but allowed him to remain on the team (he still had a redshirt season available).
On June 7, 2010, Masoli was pulled over by Springfield police for a traffic violation. After inspection Masoli was cited for driving with a suspended license, failure to stop, and possession of one ounce or less of marijuana. Two days later he was dismissed from the team for "failure to adhere to obligations previously outlined". Masoli later entered guilty pleas to both the marijuana and failure to stop charges (both non-criminal violations in Oregon)."
Sounds like he would have fit right in with the Cowboys back in the day.
This is probably a small gamble with a potentially bigger payout. Kavis Reed had a lot of success turning Jerome Messam around last season. This is no where the same situation, but they certainly must know what they are dealing with.

With behavior like that he could get elected in this country..what only pot? No cocaine?
j/k aside sounds like a guy that ran with the wrong crowd but who got his **** together enough to play ball at a very high level. On field of play this is a guy who might be a Tracy Ham type QB. Which I'm fine with.
Sometimes getting FAR AWAY is a big help for a player thats run on the wrong side of the law. Braidwoods primary problem was playing football in the same area that a lot of his problems stemmed from.
For Masoli this is perfect "new start" territory and none better than Kavis to guide a wayward soul.
Indeed one advantage of a coach like Kavis Reed is how much more than just a coach he is. Reed builds character. I suspect he can build lives.

Unless the guy plans to live in Edmonton year-round, I don't see what difference it makes where he plays. He would still go home in the offseason and that is when trouble tends to happen. Multiple robberies + the other crap? He sounds like trouble to me.

Fairpoint but we've had enough football players that liked it enough to relocate here.
The way I see it:
1)He doesn't work out and nothing ventured nothing gained. Guy is a talent, and probably worth taking a good look at. If he doesn't work out what did it cost?
2)If Masoli likes the vibe here, and recognizes his problems he might stick around and be valuable. Messam Might've as well except that he did so well here he attracted greaterNFL interest. A lot of players that buy into the Eskimos brand have set up shop here in the past. Who knows.
3)Maybe he just plays here briefly, is short term option, and doesn't last long. But could still play 1, 2 yrs here and fill in adequately.
All I know is the coaches love this guy. That's enough for me and it's a significant signing as he could be our future QB. He's not camp fodder. There is one more QB in the pipeline they like as much or more, but he won't be coming this season. He's not given up on his NFL dream just yet.
What is training camp, two months away? Get here soon.
From listening to Gregor's show whoever they had on there was talking as if Masoli would be playing. He talked about how Masoli is an exciting player and that is what the Esks are trying to sell this year.

Maybe it was Len Rhodes, who has nothing to do with football operations. Masoli won't play much if at all next season. He'll need to light it up in camp for that to happen. That's the current plan anyway.
A new running back will be signed soon. They have high hopes for the guy, but as we know most of them don't end up making the team. They think this may be the one. Did you have a lot of those when you were dating?
Zabransky has a cannon for an arm but makes bonehead decisions and lacks accuracy.
Masoli has a weak arm but does make good decisions. He's also a much better athlete and very fast in the open field.

I agree with this. Zed had a million-dollar arm with a 10-cent brain (as far as on-field decisions went). I couldn't believe some of the choices he would make. If Masoli makes it, he'll make it on the strength of his running ability. His running will open up opportunities for his less-than-stellar arm and he won't have to be the pinpoint passer that Ray was for us. It'll be an interesting camp - it always is.
It may be an interesting camp for some, but I am not excited about the Eskimos at all this year. I fully expect them to be last in the league with their QB situation. Until Tillman proves me wrong and the Eskimos start winning, I'll probably be skipping the games and maybe catching the highlights of the few wins they get this season.

Like last season?

So you'll only support a good team? I'm not saying they won't be good, but just asking the question. I've been attending Esks games since the really ugly '60s and have never given up on the team, no matter what was on the field.
I think that outside of the QB position, the team will be strong. The level of success depends highly on the QB's success, of course, but I like what they're building on defence and otherwise on offence. It'll be interesting and I'll be in the stands as I always am.

Zabranksy run first can't throw worth a damn.
Massoli run first can't throw worth a damn.
Those are the only comparisons you need. Who cares if Zabranksy can throw it into the 3rd row on an out while Massoli throws it 5 yards short. Massoli will have the same success as Zabranksy did if he comes in as a QB.
Yamon Figurs. LOVE this. Josh Freeman from the Bucs and Figurs singly handily upset Texas a few years ago. One of the best return men in college football. I think he had a cup of coffee with the Ravens.

lol. You're way off base dude. Zabransky is NOT a run first QB. Watch any of his games at Boise? He's a pure passer with slightly above average mobility.
Masoli is an athlete playing QB. His legs can change the dimensions of a game.

Cautiously optimistic. He had an ACL injury recently apparently, so it remains to be seen if he can bounce back to his old self.

Honestly I had no idea. Kinda makes sense now. I was wondering why he never stuck in the NFL. Easily one of the fastest guys I have ever seen on a football field.

Did you watch Zabranksy at all when he was with the esks? His only success was when he ran and he either pulled the ball down quick and refused to stay any where near the pocket or promptly tossed it up for grabs. You have to be able to throw to have success in the CFL. The pure runners don't last long.
