The CHL announced on Tuesday that a team in Denver, Colorado has been granted franchise rights for the 2012-13 season. The announcement was made at a press conference at the Denver Coliseum, the new home of the Denver CHL franchise.

The team also introduced some of the people that will be tasked with running the franchise as Brad Lund was announced as the team's President, Brent Cullaton is the team's Assistant General Manager and Director of Hockey Operations and Derek Armstrong was introduced as the team's head coach

The team announced that they will announce the team name, colors and unveil the logo in the near future.

1. Avalanche
2. DU
3. CHL

As I have said, minor league teams in major league cities is very tough-especially AAA teams-- hope they learned some lessons from Colorado Gold Kings (?) who failed to make it in Col Springs just down the road a few years ago, losing out to Col College- not familiar with Denver Coliseum but it looks like it might be like the Cow Palace-

For Northern suburbs there's the Colorado Eagles of ECHL (they were formerly CHL) in Loveland, Colorado. About 50 miles north of Denver.

Why Denver Coliseum? The CHL had a franchise in The Broomfield Event Center until 2009 and that facility is much newer than the Coliseum. Either way, something isn't working for the CHL in Northeast Colorado and Denver metro as this new team will be the third in a short amount of time.

One thing amazes me. The Colorado Eagles have sold out every regular season game they've played, not sure about playoffs. Damn, I would love to see how much money their owner has made since he started this venture.

Perfect spot to put a team. The Av's made hockey fans of people in Loveland/Fort Collins but it is just out of reach for too many people to travel to Denver very often for Av's games. Also not much competition for entertainment dollars up there. CSU football maybe but they haven't been very good for a few years now.

Stockton is another team in the exact same situation and they led the ECHL in attendance 06'-09'

Ontario led the league in attendance this year and the prior two years. That may be a product partly due to the economy. 2 NHL teams have created lots of hockey fans but many now may not have the amount of disposable income to afford the NHL anymore so the ECHL may be a nice option.

It will be interesting to see what happens in S.F. next season. They are in the opposite direction from San Jose than Stockton is so the hockey fans should be there but there is definately no shortage of options for entertainment dollars in S.F.

Denver should be more of a similar situation to Ontario but definately in a much shallower pool. Not sure if it can become a long term thing or not but if they can attract the fans that the Av's have lost the past few seasons it might fly.

Stan Kronke, who owns the Avs, bought the FirstBank Center in Broomfield and turned it into a concert venue. As long as he owns the building, there will be no hockey there.

Ontario led the league in attendance last year and lost money.

The Denver Coliseum is an excellent venue for minor-league hockey.

The first game I ever saw in person was a Denver Spurs' game there, 40+ years ago. Saw Bob Gassoff, John Davidson and many others as rookies playing for the Spurs.

"Spurs," by the way, would be absolutely the best choice for the CHL team's name. Bring back this classic logo, and the orange, black and white colors.

293 regular season sellouts and 57 playoff sellouts for 350 straight sellouts.

Brad Lund was great in OKC when he led the Blazers to success. He'll make the franchise be run well at the least.
