Oates Wearing #37?

Does anybody know why Oates is wearing #37?

He rose to prominence wearing #12, which he wore in St. Louis and Boston.

After his trade to Washington he wore #77 as a tribute to his ex-teammate Ray Bourque.

He wore that number in subsequent stops in Philadelphia and Anaheim.

Now he comes to Edmonton and with #77 and #12 available he takes... #37?

Does anyone know why?

I'm guessing out of respect for Dan Snyder.

Adam Oates is a total beauty and 37 would look money on his back. Not as flashy as 77 but a great number. I thought 12 was the obvious choice but eh whatever.

He started in the league wearing 21 with Detroit, but that obviously wasn't a possibility here. Could be that the Oilers are follwing the Sens' example and restricting the useage of "high numbers." Maybe too many guys going the Smyth/Hemsky route and asking for numbers in the 70/80/90 range? Who knows. Back before the Daigle trade, Ottawa institued their "no high numbers" policy -- that's why Daigle switch from 91 to 9, Bonk switched from 76 to 14 and that's why Joey Juneau wore 39 as a Senator instead of his usual 90.

Just wondering...why would a team restrict the usage of high numbers?

The notion of high numbers not being good for team unity is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard in the world of sports. Might as well shave all their heads, while we're at it.

I blame the number trade for Daigle's bust

I heard the owner hated high numbers, he thought they were unlucky

I think Bobby Allen may have dibs on #12. That's what he wore in the one game last year, and in camp (I think).

I think Allen would have to give up "dibs" for a guy like Oates.

I was very curious about this when I read about it yesterday. But, I really doubt it's a tribute to former teammate Olaf Kolzig, so you can cross that one off your list

I know. Just a thought. The Journal today said he was hoping to get #12 back.

In an interview on live TV Oates himself said he wants to stay #77.
