What's the ETA on prospects like Forsberg and Teravainen? Is the feeling that both could possibly step in and play next year or are both considered at least a year away?

Teravainen could play as soon as next year IMO. He's playing on an absolutely loaded Jokerit team and is getting top line minutes there right now after starting the season much lower on the depth chart. Very creative offensive game already, similar (though not entirely) stylistically to Skinner.

Forsberg is a bit more of a mystery to me. He might be able to come over and play immediately, but I don't see him being as much of an instant impact player as Teravainen could be. I'd say best case, since he's in the Allsvenskan, is drafting him and then pushing him towards coming over and playing in the AHL next year with plenty of chances to come up as a callup.

Geez Dave I hope you're right about Forsberg falling. But I think that won't happen. Teravainen or Faksa will be our selection. No way JR steps outside of comfort zone and picks Dman in the 1st again. Unless Murray falls which also won't happen either, unless we have another strange Fowler/Gormley freefall.

Yeah this draft is a bit wide open in that regard honestly, but it's pretty easy to figure out who most teams are taking, or at the very least what position. There are a few wildcards right now though.

Columbus I'm not sure who they're going to take because the assumption all along has been that they had the #1 pick and that would be Nail. Could easily be Murray now though. But Howson being sold on Forsberg wouldn't shock me... though I see that as highly unlikely.

The Ducks and Isles likewise could possibly throw a wrench into things when it comes to Forsberg, most likely the Ducks.

But all it takes is one GM there that feels that they would want to go in a different direction (IE one of the teams I have taking a dman takes a forward) and we're talking Faksa or Teravainen instead of Forsberg.

I'm not getting my hopes up for Forsberg at all, especially at #4 on Bob McKenzie's lottery list. All the scouting reports I've seen have said that Forsberg's a definite first liner. No way 7 teams pass that up.

Galch, Teravainen, and Faksa might be there. But I'm not sure any of them have the definite top line upside.

I'm personally rooting for Matthew Dumba to drop and force us to take him, just because he sounds like the fun kind of defenseman to watch.

Wasn't there "no way" that Murphy would slide to #12 last year?

I don't recall anyone discussing it because the idea was so out there.

Now that you mention it, who did we all think we were going to take last year? Was it Biggs?

I know I remember alot of posters talking up Beaulieu and Armia because of his size. And we thought Scheifele might still be around but the Jets reached and took him at 7 if my memoy serves.

I think a fair amount of people wanted McNeill, IIRC. I also remember some talk about Oleksiak, among others.

Murphy was my pick had we been picking in the Top 5 even, and McNeill was my "realistic" target. I had no idea that Murphy would be there when we picked, or even that we would be interested if he was. He's not a typical JR pick. He likes to draft 6-3 kids from the WHL, OHL, or NCAA.

And with the 12th overall selection of the 2011 NHL Draft, the Carolina Hurricanes select Strom Thurmond from the the United States Senate.

....no?

Did you mean Strome, who was grabbed 5th overall by the Islanders?

If memory serves correctly, board consensus by the last couple of days before the draft was that JR was targeting Scheifele...

And by the observation of groans being heard at the Canes table at the time of the Jets pick, it seems that the board was right. Success.

Pretty sure we didn't draft a dead guy. But hey, it's JR so who knows

I'd say he needs to play one more year in FEL... Skillwise he's there but he needs to improve his physical play, skating and strength. He's one of the youngest players in this draft.

It's a stretch but he reminds me of a bit Teemu Selänne sometimes when I see him playing. He's got this tremendous vision, almost all of his goals seem to be "easy" because his positioning is so good. Also, he doesn't have the most powerful shot but it's very quick and accurate. Similar to Teemu's... And no, I don't suggest that he becomes a kind of legend that Teemu is, just some similarities in their playing styles

I wouldn't be disappointed if he falls in to our hands... Even tho he plays for a team I don't really like

Yep. Which is why Faksa will be our guy if he is still there.

2-3 years would be more realistic. He's still built like a twig.

"We are proud to announce that, with the 8th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, the Carolina Hurricanes select Howie Morenz from Mitchell of the Western Ontario Junior League. It's not often that you are in a position to select an already established Hall-of-Famer, and we have indeed found ourselves in this position. Howie's experience as a leader and MVP player will be a fantastic addition to this team, and we would also like to announce that this is the top-line player we've been looking for to play with Staal."

Might be a good signing, in this day in age I believe we have the technology to repair broken legs.

Although some think he died of a "broken heart"

Assuming wikipedia is correct, here are all the draft picks currently held by the Carolina Hurricanes

Our first
Our second, San Jose's second
Our third
Our fourth, New Jersey's fourth, and Boston's fourth
Our fifth
Our sixth
our seventh

So my questions to you smart people are these. Who does JR look at in the later rounds? Which picks does he trade? And what Plymouth Whaler does he take three rounds too soon?

I'll be surprised if JR doesn't trade at least 1 (or more in a package) of those picks for a more "NHL ready" forward prospect like he's done in the past with Nash and Sanguinetti.

I'll also be surprised if he doesn't select Lukus Sutter if he is around for one of our 2nd round picks.

Other than that, I have to rely on guys like Dave and Vagrant as I don't know enough about the majority of the prospects.

Well we have the two previous Plymouth Whaler captains in the organization so I'm guessing JR uses his 7th rounder on Beau Schmitz.
