Oh so if you stand in front of shots & get paid a little less it's perfectly alright to overlook the horrible defense. I especially like his blind reverse around the boards play that went right to the Flyers player.
The question isn't whether Michalek has been great or not, it's if he's more or less expendable than Martin.
I guess we just disagree. I saw Martin deliberately and repeatedly avoid battles yesterday, which is shameful. Michalek wasn't sharp, but he wasn't shying away from engaging.
This is one of the (numerous) reasons I'm not so hard on Michalek as I am on Martin this season. While neither are what would be described as physical, at least Michalek doesn't look like he's avoiding contact, or shying away from the physical battles. Martin's playing like a powder puff girl.

I've been lurking around these boards for a couple of years now, and this s**t finally made me write something.
Difference between Michalek and Martin is that one goes in with effort and even sacrifices his body in order to make a play. Yes, sometimes his plays are no good, but at least he shows effort at something which is standard defensive play - retrieval of dump-in facing opponent's forecheck.
Other one, Martin, showed piss poor effort and seemed more concerned about preserving his body that sacrificing it. This is what bugs me, and what bugged me all along with Martin. You expect defensemen to exhibit effort every time, and if they don't they better be Paul Coffey or Erik Karlsson good on offensive side.
I don't know, asking who's more expendable between Martin and Michalek is kinda like asking if you prefer ankle surgery first, then the shoulder, or vice-versa. Both could go, as far as I'm concerned.
Let's reserve judgment until after Round 1, but if we lose this series sweeping changes along the back end are needed.

I don't care how many years he has left on his contract. If he continues to play like he did Wednesday night Shero will try to get rid of him this off season. I can't believe that they don't see what everyone else sees. His avoidance of physical play will never help any team win a Stanley Cup. You can overlook some of that in a long season but playoffs are about who's ready and willing to do battle and he clearly wasn't Monday night..

Like I said earlier, he looked like Whitney without the size or offense.
And anybody who knows how much I hated Ryan Whitney knows what a damning statement that is.

I'd take Whitney over Martin any day of the weak. Guy was soft but he wasn't a coward. Martin is the biggest coward I've ever seen at any level in 26 years of going to the rink.

I never would have signed him for 5 mil to begin with. The only bad move Shero has made. I'm older and have been going to games since the Hornets. Most players turn it up a notch in the playoffs. He's turned down one.

I hated Kevin Hatcher as well, but for me its now
Whitney
...
Hatcher
.
Martin
Martin actively bails out on plays; Michelak takes hits to make a play-he got creamed 5 or 6 times BUT he got the puck out of the zone. Martin just won't do that. He bailed on an icing and I believe he bailed on chipping the puck for the Flyers second goal.

I'm wondering how many people here watched Martin's playoff runs in NJ. It's not as if his turning it down a notch in the playoffs is a new development.

One of my favorite Penguins moments ever was when Ryan Whitney beat the **** out of Wade Redden in the playoffs back in '08. I suppose I'd have to be high out of my mind to expect Martin to do the same.
I see what most everyone's saying. I just think that for as soft as Martin is, he still does some things well, even in the playoffs. That's not to say I wouldn't want to see him traded in the offseason. But this thread suggests that people are ignoring the things he does well on account of him being so soff.

That fight gave me hope for Ryan Whitney's physical game. I got punked, needless to say.
The guy doesn't have to fight to be playoff D-man, leave that to Engelland. I just don't want him to be backing away from hits when a play needs to be made. There are plenty of good playoff D-men that don't fight. Even Strait takes a hit to make a play. That's just fundamental playoff hockey.
The hate for Martin is different. If Martin made a million less, people would probably be wayy easier on him. People ****in despised Melichar. I'm pretty sure people around here wouldn't give him a sip of water if he was dying of thirst...especially Rob Scuderi.
Tell me who he has taken money away from? And how this contract has hurt us at all so far? If we don't sign parise because we're a couple mil short, be angry. If we don't resign Crosby/Malkin/Letang/Staal whoever, be angry. Right now, Martin is far from an albatross and if he becomes one, action will be taken. You guys just constantly overreact

Can I have a couple quarts of whatever brand of kool aid you're sipping.

You're right. Having a budget for the defense that allowed you to allocate a grand total of 13.5M for 6 wingers for your top nine was a good thing. Thank God we have Paul Martin.
