I'm a Bruins fan, so naturally I was watching the Bruins-Caps game quite intently. From an early mark in the game one thing was apparent: Alex Ovechkin was hitting Dennis Seidenberg. Genius!
He knows he'll be out there against the Seidenberg/Chara pairing. Instead of trying to fight with the old monster he came and took the body to Seidenberg, letting him know he wouldn't be contained. I thought it was genius strategy.
I don't know if I'd call it strategic. Ovie does like getting physical though. Showing that you wont be intimidated by a shutdown pairing is a big part of his game.
I'm not sure I would call it genius but the way Ovechkin played is how you should be playing hockey. He takes a big hit and gets right back up to jump into the play. He doesn't skate, whining to the refs. He doesn't go slashing people in retaliation. He waits for his chance to throw a hit back and threw some really nice hits. That's how hockey's supposed to be played, with a respect for the sport, but lately more and more players seem to be turning away from that.
I honestly don't see Washington beating Boston but if they do, I feel like I probably wouldn't be rooting against them the rest of the playoffs. I really do hope Ovechkin gets at least one Cup in his career, he certainly deserves one.

he wasnt intimidated, but he sure was shut down by Chara/Seids. 1 shot on goal. just wow. and they hit him every chance they got (even though he's a rock to move)
I wouldn't say he's a genius but avoiding Chara (quite possibly the best shutdown D-man in the league) and working over the guy physically you're lined up against all night is smart playoff hockey no matter who you are.
Seids is a tank as well so it outta be interesting to see who gets the best of that matchup. I love the way Ovechkin plays though, that guys incredible even when he isn't scoring.

Always a good strategy to try and wear down the defense, but Seidenberg is as solid as they come. No guarantee who wears who out.
So, I guess bottom line is it might be a good strategy, might not. Depends on who wins series and who holds up better physically.
Regardless, in no way shape or form is this a genius strategy. Sorry to nitpick, but you used the word Genius two times for a guy who had one shot on net, no goals, and no assists. I guess we'll see, but..................

Thank you so much for saying this. I always think this as well. People can diss Ovie all they want but he is a man out there not a little boy like so many other 'stars' in the league.
"Chara was getting ownd by Ovechkin! He made Chara look completely ineffective! He was all over the ice! Hitting everything in sight! No one stood a chance! He had one shot on goal!"

I get what you're saying, but I'd rather get slashed than charged/boarded. I really like the way AO plays the game though. Hopefully he figures out whatever slump he's in because when he's on, he's electric. A few seasons ago, I'd be immediately afraid whenever he got the puck. It didn't matter if he was on his own blue line. Now, eh... not so much.

Well, you're right, wouldn't call it genius. It's good hockey and makes the games fun to watch. I enjoyed watching the game. Can't say that about some other teams, though, so this was a treat. Looking forward to the next game.
