So not that I don't think he has value, but why is everyone trading Hemsky everywhere? I mean JUST resigned for 2 years, to turn around a deal him in the offseason would look ridiculously bad.

Isnt that what happened to Carter and Richards? Woudnt be so bad

I guess, but I don't think they had recently resigned, especially not in Richards' case, it was more everyone expected them to stay for the long haul, where as if you weren't dealing Hemsky at the deadline and decided to resign him, that should mean you plan to keep him, atleast for the balance of next season.
Setoguchi got traded days after re-signing in SJ this summer. But its not something I think Edmonton should do.

His outlet pass wasn't quite as good as Pitkanen's, but it was close.
Scenario 1:
Oilers sign UFA Bryan Allen (@3 years $4 million per)
Oilers sign Denis Grebeshkov 1 year, $1.75 million
Scenario 2:
Oilers trade (C) Sam Gagner for (D) Jay Bouweemester
Feaster can sell the acquistion of Gagner (who would slide into their no.1 center role pretty much right off the hop) + the addition of Baertschi into their top six as a "phased rebuild". Oilers hope playing with more offensive kids revitalizes Jay Bo's game.
I see them actually keeping Iginla in this scenario and having a top six along the lines of (a mix of kids + vets)
We sign an Arnott/Stoll/Jokinen in the interim to replace Gagner. Downside with this is Bouweemester is nowhere as physical as Allen even if he moves the puck great.
I wouldn't be against bringing Grebeshkov back, I actually liked him here. But a big no to Bouwmester. Any team with 12+ million locked up in Bouwmester and Horcoff isn't going anywhere.

Just awful. Why do you want any part of Bouwmeester anyway?
Draft Yakupov, maybe sign one D_man, Garrison, Schultz if we're lucky. Give the team the whole season, then weight options at the end of the year. By the end of next year we have to decide if Gagner is staying around or not, we'll know if Hemsky is part of the long term and we'll start to make decisions of Paajarvi and Hartikanenen. Try Hall at centre.
There's no sense in making random trades and totally shifting around the fabric of the team now. Give the team with Yakupov a whole year to make decisions.

So you're in favour of another year of evaluation. This is the mindset that will allow us to miss the playoffs again next year. Let's be aggressive to find players that can help fill the holes we have.

I agree with Bouwmeester putting us into cap hell with Horcoff already here. Big no unless we already have a deal in place to move Horcoff, which we will need to address the C position then as we will be down 2 C's.

Yes, I am.
Just because we lucked out on this pick doesn't mean we should stray away from what we've been doing for the last few years and look for quick fixes. Who says we can't content for a playoff spot with last year's team, with a full season of Hall, Whitney and Hemsky adding in Yakupov and Garrison?

+1 .. dont want to see us lose someone like Smid just because we are up against the cap. Also, it will make guys like Petry and Smid demand a lot more as free agents if they outperform JBo.
He's one would we trade 1st pick for Getzlaf big skilled centre to play with Hall and Hemsky makes alot of sense to me he had a bad year but i dont think that will happen to years in a row. Trade for Getzlaf sign Justin Schultz and then go after Suter. Got to think if the first 2 happen Suter wqould take a long look at the oil

No, I don't think we make the playoffs with adding those 2 players. We need to add a top 6 winger with some grit and physical edge, a good 3rd line winger, and either 1 top pairing Dman or 2 top 4 Dmen.
Enough of this losing culture, it's going to start rubbing off on our young talent. I hope Tambo has enough balls to move some of our youth for upgrades in some key areas. The only untouchables should be Hall, RNH & Eberle. The rest I would move for the right return.

ANA is weak down the middle and cant afford to lose Getzlaf. Also he will be a UFA after next season and one year of him is not worth losing the 1st overall over.
We should target him next trade deadline using up our 2013 1st ++ or make a strong pitch for him if he hits free agency.

That's what I've been saying, basically. Hall, Eberle, RNH, Hartkianen and Yakupov are the players to build around. Paajarvi, Gagner and Hemsky can all be traded. If we trade the pick, we have to keep those guys around and I have no desire to do that. THose three are the ones who should be dealt for positions of need. Not Yakupov because he is astronomically more valuable to this team than any of those three guys. Gagner is easily replaceable, I'd rather sign Stoll than keep him around. Hemsky and Paajarvi are too soft to keep around. I'd rather ship them for a D-man and sign some grinders, like Tootoo.

??? You just said stand pat, besides drafting and maybe 1 free agent signing.
I don't want to see Grebeshkov here again. He's not a bad player. Just that he is neither 6th/7th type of d, nor is he good enough to be a #2/3 d for a playoff team. I think the fit is not there with what we needed.
Potter is a good 7th 8th d to keep around. Can play a little bit of PP with a decent shot. Also the fact that he will step up for his teammate, play reasonably physical and not getting push around, that is something that Grebeshkov cannot give us.
Adding Grebeshkov = making the team softer and easier to play against.
Think about how much trouble he will have trying to knock the Sedins off the puck in the down low cycle, trying to handle Backes or Perry coming off the wing, trying to push Johan Fransen out of the way in front of the net.
How much is he making there? His numbers weren't that great last year maybe his Russian team wouldn't want him back at a high price. I wonder if he'd come back here for a more reasonable price.
If he could come here and play well with all our kids (who are quite frankly much better than the Gagners/Coglianos/Nilssons he played with here before), he could score himself a nice long term deal.
The only thing I could find was this. It says he was making in excess of the 3.15M he got in the NHL. So as long as another KHL team is willing to pony up anything even close to that number, I think he's likely staying there.
If we could get him for 2M I would happily do it. He may not be the toughest d-man, but none of our current guys can pass the puck(when Whitney is hurt) and Grebs could definitely help there.
He'd still be a distant plan B to Schultz though. If we can get Schultz, Grebs isn't needed.

He couldn't do any of that.
I think he's a decent 2nd pairing option, and he wouldn't be my first choice to acquire this offseason, but I think he's a better option than running with the same group we had this season.
2 sheets of double pane glass for one sheet of triple pane glass?
To Edmonton: Green
To Washington: Hemsky and Whitney
It's a big risk for both teams, but gives us a shot at a better D man, although he hasn't shown it in his limited time this year.
Green's an RFA. Any idea what he is looking for in a new contract?
I'm not a big fan of targetting green because of his injury risk, but since thats what we are giving up i'd take it.
I'd be shocked if they would.

All the players mentioned werent injury prone players who were 2 months from being a UFA signing ridiculous short, highly reasonable deals.
we can trade him in a year, but it would be disgraceful to do so this summer. he could have been a ufa right now chosen where he wanted to go, while getting at least twice the contract he signed with us.

Actually really like that lineup.
Little versatility in it wiith smyth being able to move up if harty or someone else struggles for a few games. Jones can slip in for someone in the bottom six. If we can unload belanger some how id try and get gaustad or a bigger bottom 6 centerman but other then that i kinda like it.

True. Obviously if there's a better 2C availble go for it, i just use Stoll as a realistic upgrade.
