Of course it was always TO, followed by MTL. They have the most loyal fans, the most fans that hate each other, and the most fans of other teams that hate them.
They basically have the most fans. It's all part of being the center of the hockey universe. Cheers.
Serves me right for looking only at the pretty pictures.
The paragraph above that detailing the casual fan response of most favourite looks like it turns out to be:
1. 19% Montreal
2. 17% Toronto
3. 11% Vancouver
4. 5% Edmonton
4. 5% Calgary
Then Winnipeg and Ottawa not given results. Nor the 'No Favourite' option.
They have both surpassed Montreal as my most hated teams.
If you're Bruins hadn't played the Canucks in the playoffs, I doubt you would have even noticed them. My point being that what builds hate is rivalry far more than a teams antics. Otherwise, the Bruins would be the most hated team given the suspensions and other stuff they pulled off this year (Lucic on Miller, Marchand on Salo, Thornton's hilarious dive etc.)
It's the truth people. I work all accross Canada, stay in hotels and BS about hockey in bars. The average fan doesn't hate the Canucks at all. The rabid hockey fan prone to jealousy (they're out early or they're sick of hearing about how beautiful BC is) sure does, but those people are the minority.
Because that minority is so rabid, they spend a lot of time focusing on hating the Canucks by making videos and slagging them online. But the Joe-Schmo hockey fan in Canada isn't nearly as passionate about it.
The haters are the minority, a very vocal minority, but a minority nonetheless. This poll proves what I've suspected for a long time. People I talk to may say something like "not sure they have what it takes," or "is their goaltending going to hold up?" But the average fan doesn't poop their pants every time a Canuck falls down and race to the internet to call them a diver, they just have better things to do. Most people are not as wrapped up in hockey (in particular those teams long out of it) as the people around here, that's just a fact of life.
Most hated by the average hockey fan? Not a chance.
Most hated by the hockey obsessed minority? Sure.
The numbers for Alberta are the most disturbing. Why live with so much hate?

I think the hate is really misdirected anger. They are angry that they have nothing to cheer for again this playoff year so they channel that anger into cheering against a rival team. They then try to find things that confirm their original bias against that team they are cheering against. That is why any dive or other antic by their hated team gets magnified by these angry fans and all other dives and antics by their own team or other teams that they don't hate are ignored. It really just boils down to confirmation bias.

No I would still hate the Canucks. With players like Burrows, Lapierre, Kesler, Bieksa, Sedins, Luongo, Edler, and Hansen etc. it's hard not to hate them. Thorntons "hilarious dive" is nothing compared to Kesler and Burrows dives in game 1.

You would still hate the Canucks if you hadn't played them in the playoffs? You only think that the Bruins antics are less serious because you are a Bruins fan. Try to see things from another fans perspective (I know that can be very difficult for people on this board). A while back someone posted a video of all the Bruins dives in the playoffs last year. Did you notice it? Now ask yourself why should other non-Bruin fans believe that those dives are any less serious than the dives the Canucks committed? My point being it is the rivalry created by facing the Canucks in the final that makes you think that the Canucks dives are worse.

The number of people who dislike Vancouver in Alberta makes perfect sense. You probably have a majority of fans who like the Oilers and Flames and chances are they will dislike the other 2 Canadian teams in their division. The fact that Vancouver is the best of the 3, will sway votes that way, but say if in 5 years Vancouver is an average team and the Oilers are challenging for cups I am guessing a large portion of the flames fans will focus there hate on Edmonton.
Looking at the Macleans magazine poll, it looks like the farther you go east, the more of a non issue Vancouver becomes(either love or hate)
YES NUCKS IN 4 FOR THE CUP LORORLELRELRLSLRLSLSLLSL
So you let the people you have met colour your opinion of an entire fanbase? Again, people need to step out of their insular little bubbles and see the whole picture.
I think we as human beings tend to focus on the worst in others in order to make us feel better about ourselves.

That's human nature. If the loudest voices in a crowd are screaming out some dumb drivel. You assume the crowd they are in supports this. While it doesn't prove true it just makes it hard to tolerate the entire crowd and hence the hate is born.
I also go by the rule of thumb that for every 5 people there is one obnoxious idiot and this holds true for whatever religion, race, sex, or nationality. The bigger fan bases such as the Leafs and Habs just have more idiots. The percentage of idiots is probably the same as that of any other fanbase, there are just more of them with loud voices trying to sell their BS filled agenda.
Hence why Toronto is the most hated team. Makes sense.
Disclaimer: I don't hate the Leafs (I do hate the Habs but you can't blame me as I'm a Bruins fan and expect them to hate me as well)

I completely agree with you for pointing out to people that you can't just look to your own personal experiences to validate the fact or fiction of a matter. I think #83 of this thread could also use that wisdom, lol.
To counter your second point, I think it's an easy out to simply blame dislike on jealousy. The Canucks have a reputation that have earned the ire of fans all across the league not just fans of other Canadian teams. It's far too simplistic to chalk it up to jealousy and insecurity. Many people here who don't like the Canucks would tell you it's because of the way they play the game. I don't think that reason should be overlooked. I wouldn't doubt that there are people who hate teams due to jealousy for some reason or another, but there doesn't have to be just one answer to the question.

Yep, there are about 100k members on HFBoards. 18 million people watched Game 7 of last year's finals and each finals game was watched by an average of 11 million people. There are probably more hockey fans who may not have been interested in watching Vancouver vs. Boston too.
So HFBoards represents less than 1% of hockey fans, and regular posters probably represent a fraction of 1%. The ones that feel compelled to post how they dislike a certain team probably end up representing about 0.01% of hockey fans into total (but account for a significant number of posts), so it's easy to see how we can have a distorted view of what the average hockey fan thinks from reading these forums.
Except I like the Bruins, and unlike Vancouver, they actually won.
Blows your theory out of the water...
How much would you like them if they played your team in the playoffs, and, say, ran your goalie or low bridged one of your defensemen? You haven't had much reason to see them as a big rival, therefore, your hate for them is tempered.
People don't even hate the Leafs that much anymore.
They feel more sorry for us than anything.
I think it was just a natural reaction to pick Leafs on the list, without thinking.
With that said, I think all Canadian teams hate all other Canadian teams. We all want to be the first ones to bring the cup back to the motherland, which is why most of the hate is centralized around Vancouver; they pose the biggest threat at the moment.

Except most hockey fans I talk to (not on hfboards) hate the Canucks. Even radio personalities talk about how much they are hated. Heck, even the LA twitter incident last game shows it.

So the Sens never played the Canucks in the playoffs, and there hasn't really been any incidents in the reg. season (besides the door opening incident on Winchester).
