Just hire the best GM available, if he's English, hire a French actor to play the role of the GM.
I've let my feelings known about Nill(#1) or McGuire(#2), so I'll take "overlords" advice & likely will get angry at some here & break his rule. So I'm out of these GM threads until the Habs select the new man.
I think the 'Savard likes french players' myth has been put to sleep with the analysis written by Mathias Brunet. Aside from his great 1984 draft (possibly the best in the history of the organisation), the francophone players drafted by Savard were not a plenty and were not as dominant.
Alain Vigneault clearly wants to be the next Habs coach....
I'm actually cheering for L.A with that in mind. Also cheering for Chicago (figure might help Phoenix relocate and Dave Tippett becoming available), Washington (doubt Julien gets canned but you never know), and Florida (Lamoriello for GM)
Elliotte Friedman is always a great read. His April 11th article suggests some possible candidates for NHL coaching jobs. He mentions: Tippett, Dallas Eakins, Todd Nelson, Jon Cooper, Mike Sullivan, Craig MacTavish, Bob Hartley, Jim Playfair, Peter Horachek, and Gerard Gallant.
Mentions Hartley, Roy, and Jacques Lemaire specifically for Montreal.

The Canucks may be forced to let the guy go. Its a business and change after failure must occur. Personally I think he is a good mix of accountability, strategy and leadership. He has proven he can coach offensive teams and defensive teams. What's not to like? Oh yeah, and he is francophone.
