Graduated last year with a business degree. Decided I would rather pursue music than something I hated, like business (although that is a huge part of being successful in music, so I better learn to like it). But for some reason I can't even get a reply to part time jobs, like barista, host, server, etc. Does a degree mean anything for these kinds of jobs? Am I overqualified?? I don't even get responses usually. Resume has been refined tirelessly. Not sure what to do here.
My story:
-Graduated with an MA in Geography in 2010, focus was on Population Geography/Sprawl as my major research was a paper on sprawl in the Hartford region using Census Data and regressional analysis.
-BA included a Business Minor
-Aspired to work either in the US Census or DOT or Regional Planning Agency
-I have not found work in almost 2 years. I am very frustrated and desperate. I want to work in my field or at least use my skills.
-In a dream world, I would be working as a demographer studying TV Ratings/Fanbases of sports teams.
Do any of you have tips at all on how I can get a gainful career either in sports demography or anywhere relevant to my skillset and interests (Urban Planner/Site Analyst)?

Maybe see if you can find work in the city planning department of a large(r) city? It's not sports-related - unless they're (re)building an arena/stadium/field/what-have-you, but it's still at least something.
Anyone know what the hell a person can do with a B.A in English? My girlfriend graduated 4 months ago and can't find a job and is making like 10 bucks an hour as a temp. I do not like the uncertainty of her not having a permanent job, since once her temp gig is up I'll be on the hook for all the bills again...
She's become pretty complacent in her job search because she has no idea what to look for (Why she got this useless degree, I don't know), and has mostly been looking for work as a secretary.
Would you say in HS you would benefit more from which of the following, pick only one:
Work a lot (weekends and nights at minimum wage, but not long hours about 40-50 hrs bi-weekly) and maintain a low 80's average
Or
work less (25-35) and do more work for school to have a high 80's average in most classes.
Work less.
Think about what your next employers are going to see on your resume. They're going to see the job you worked at. And honestly, they have no idea and probably don't care if it was 10 hours a week or 40. It really makes little difference, especially in high school. You have the experience and the reference.
Your marks will help more if you're looking at post-secondary school. Marks don't matter that much in the grand scheme of things, but it opens up much more doors than a few more hours of work per week.

Jobs are such weird things to gauge because it differs between companies. I'm a high school drop out, got a 2 years liberal arts degree from a Junior college but then got 10 years of experience in my industry. The most I made until last year was 50K a year and I make 2 1/2 times that now.
I think at least get a job and get some experience even if it's the crappiest job in the world. It's good life experience and can teach you to appreciate your job when you get a good one so you don't blow it.
I worked at an old folks home when I was 15 and could only go up from there

My girlfriend graduated in December with her Bachelor's in business management with a minor in organizational behavior, and she never really liked it but continued because she couldn't think of what else to do. Now that she's done school she has no intention to work in that field, and she's been spending all of her time in her passion which is acting. I don't mean movies, I mean she's been doing plays and has even committed to organize her own. For myself, as someone who likes money, this decision obviously isn't the best money-wise, but as her boyfriend and as someone who wants her to be happy, I'm happy for her. She's doing exactly what she wants to now, and granted, she isn't making any money, but she applied to the national theater school and would love a career in the theater domain, so I'm hoping she can find something in a business management role in theater.
All this to say that, I know exactly where you come from and I think you would be stupid to work in something you don't like, you'll spend your whole life unhappy. Keep going at what makes you happy and I think you'll end up right on track.
I'm in the same boat. After graduating from business, I was only able to find part-time work, short term contracts, and a sales job that I hated and sucked at. Decided to jump on the skilled trades bandwagon. I wish I would have done this right out of high school. It's good pay and I found an apprenticeship right away. Some places are slower then others but like the other guy said, someone in Alberta will hire you.
I got my business degree last year, but I just chose not to apply to any jobs unlike my peers whose starting salaries are nearly 6 figures already. I don't feel like working 9-5, nor any hours longer then that. Even salary can't convince me unless it's ridiculously high.
Looking like I'm all set to get a job with AmeriCorps to live in San Francisco next year. I tried so hard to find something out there because I've always loved the city. Now I'm suddenly feeling.....I don't know if scared is the right word. But, apprehensive. It is weird because I've lived all over the country and overseas on my own before and stuff. I don't know...
And, what kind of work can I get in Alberta? I'm an American citizen, mid-20's, was in the US military, now will have a double major and a minor (Arts, not science or engineering)
