[PIT] Beau Bennett signs ELC

Bob McKenzie ‏ @TSNBobMcKenzie

PIT 2010 1st rounder Beau Bennett is leaving Univ of Denver after sophomore season, has signed with the Penguins.

Figured it was thread worthy seeing as he was a first rounder.

Interesting move, I thought he'd be back at Denver because he hasn't played as much hockey as he should of especially this season. Mass exodus of talent for the Pioneers this summer.

I was hoping he'd stick around for another year because of his injury-shortened season...but he made it quite clear from the start that he was planning on going to DU for two years to add bulk (which he definitely did) and then turn professional.

I'm sort of surprised by this. Thought he would stick around in Denver to bulk up and keep progressing. Maybe he makes the team next year. But he'll probably start out in Wilkes-barre to get used to being a pro.

He doesn't have a hope of playing regularly in the NHL next year, he's still a project.

Would you say he is an Etem-lite?

Your lack of faith in the Penguins' ability to get injured is intriguing.

But seriously, he should spend all of next year in Wilkes-Barre and probably a good bit of the following year, too. By which time he will be declared a bust and we'll hear how the Pens should trade him while he still has a shread of value.

Both are from California, but that's about it. Etem supposedly has blinding speed. From what little I've seen of Bennett he isn't the fastest guy or strongest. He needs to keep getting better in those areas. He's more of a thinking man's player with good vision/creativity, great hands and just high skill in general. Just lacks a bit in speed and strength.

I'm also surprised he's going pro. I thought he'd go back to school, hopefully stay healthier, have a good season and continue to build strength and work on the skating. He can do that to some degree in the AHL though. Dustin Jeffrey got much better as a skater in the AHL.

key word being regularly, I don't doubt he will be an injury call up at some point. Kid is a boom bust prospect for sure, he's either going to be a 20-30 goal scorer or nothing more than an AHL/Europe player, from all the times I've seen him I would say it's 50/50

awesome kid, wish him the best

I don't get it.

The guy moves a million miles from home to play Tier 2 and preserve his eligibility, presumably so he can get an education and then he bails after two seasons when he has only the slimmest shot at cracking the Pens lineup next year.

I have always liked him as a prospect but I imagine he would be farther along if he just went to the WHL.

The plan was always for him to play 2 years at Denver. Injuries have been the problem so I'm not sure how much WHL would have helped in that regard.

tier 2 was also a decision based on family reasons
