Unlike others, I suspect there will be a rush on forwards due to the lesser quality compared to defensemen. I would therefore prefer us to take a defenseman at 12.
12. Cody Ceci D (R), 6ft3, 203lbs
If some players move on like I believe I will, then we need to replenish the defensive ranks without reaching
I agree with the Ceci pick, every game Ive seen him he has been the best or one of the best on the Ice, I have seen him outplay Dougie Hamilton in recent games. If you ask me who is a better prospect between Gaunce its Ceci pretty easily, saying that with the lack of fowards ranked high Gaunce could go before Ceci

Exactly. You should not draft in the NHL for percieved need, but for the BPA as these guys are often 3 years away from the NHL.
And I think we can use some of wealth of senior defensemen to trade for an established prospect already in the AHL and close to moving up to the NHL, a better option maybe than taking a forward in a weak draft for forwards.
None that are as positionally good as Ceci. It is a weak draft for Forwards IMO
As we've got 9 senior defensemen under contract or likely to be resigned with 7places available , it would make more sense to look to move some of these for prospects already drafted who are that much further along i.e. for someone like Victor Rask of the Hurricanes.
Lets not forget, that with the likes of Weber, Leopold and Regeher only having a year left and with McNabb and Brennan likely to move up to Buffalo permanently or move on, the depth we believe we currently have will disappear very quickly.
I say draft a defenseman whilst moving veteran defensemen in trade for already drafted Forward prospects

I understand what you're saying, but I'm trying to talk about specific players instead of generalities. Which forwards, by name, are you assuming will be gone when we pick Ceci?
Since all projections at this point are very rough and have a high margin of error, you always draft for organizational need unless you are crossing a very clear tier in projected NHL effectiveness. Again due to the inherent flaws in projections made at this point, you ideally take a shotgun approach and draft for the same need several times.

I think there is a chance that Faksa, and Girgensons will be gone, and whilst Gaunce is solid, I am not sure he'll be anything more than a 3rd liner.
I did that Pontus Aberg LW could be an interesting pick but when you consider the defensemen that we could lose.
Consider this scenario.
We trade Leopold (1year left) and Sekera for forward help and/or forward prospects.
This means we have a season starting 7 of Myers, Ehrhoff, Sulzer, Regeher, Weber, with McNabb and Brennan finally moving up.
Both Regeher and Weber have one year left.
We could have only 5 veterans under contract at the end of the season with only Pysyk done at Rochester as a potential Top4 defenseman.
As we've proven more successful at spotting and developing defensemen I say continue to replenish the ranks
Maybe our best option is to take Ceci or whatever defenceman falla to 12 if Faksa and Teravainen are gone, then try to move up from 23 to around 15 and hope to nab Gaunce or Grigensons, or stay at 23+ and take mark Janakowski as a real boom bust pick.

Button's risers or "favorites" include: Teravainen (7), Finn (8), Lindholm (9), Subban (10), Jankowski (15).
Button's falling list could include: Murray (12), Grigorenko (14), Faksa (18), Gaunce (26).
I don't consider myself a draft expert or anything, but Murray and Grigorenko not being in the top 10 is a friggin joke. It's really hard for me to take his rankings seriously when I see that...

Some might say there is a reason that Button is working at TSN and isn't an NHL GM anymore.....
