This really is like Fiddler on the Roof, isn't it? All the backward villagers knowing better is out there, but stubbornly remaining where they are, doing only what had always been done, daring to dream no higher than their fathers dreamed, merely because "this is our home!" Until they were given no choice at all. Just because that was the tradition and for no other real reason.
Good win today. Buchholz really settled down after the first inning.
Hopefully Crawford gets healthy soon. I haven't given up on him like a lot of other people have. He can win back a lot of fans and help the team if he can fill in for Ellsbury at the top of the line up.
safeco is such a big park. i think i might be able to go 5.3 and scatter 5 or 6 hits. i like what the mariners are doing to try to be competitive until they can get the offense to catch up: run prevention. they have three really good outfielders to just glide under flyballs out there, make all of your ****** pitchers look good and then sell them off to the highest bidder.
If I was a GM there I'd focus on line drive hitters who get on base. and speedy hitters. You're not going to have too many guys hit 30 HR's there, so you need people who can sting it on a line and make the best possible use of the time that ballpark can give you to run.
One of the reasons the Sox aren't wise to go lusting after high end speed is because their ballpark doesn't give you a ton of room to run unless you get it out into the triangle or right to the wall down the right field lin. That's a team that builds its offense around getting on the base and hitting a double off the wall. Best doubles park in baseball, and you are going to get those 2 bases and not 3 whether you're Carl Crawford or Mike Lowell.
If any single outfielder we had could actually run down a fly ball, that would have been a much better outing for Doubront. Ellsbury was sorely missed.

It makes you respect how well Elsbury and Drew played the positions so well.
Well, it didn't take long for Bobby V to light a fire: Already on Youk's back
Pedroia: 'I really don't know what Bobby is trying to do but that's not the way we go about our stuff around here'
That's interesting...
It's weird because Bobby V said he apologized to Youk AFTER Youk approached him, and now Youk isn't in the lineup today? He's finally starting to be productive at the plate, why sit him?
He's a spoiled brat. He sulks when things don't go his way and he blames others when things go wrong.
He had the audacity to call out Ells in the media 2 years ago when he left the team to figure out what was wrong with his ribs but then last season, he did the exact same thing when he was hurt. Did Ells call him out? Nope. He kept quiet.
I'm sorry but Youk is a huge problem in the clubhouse and I'm glad someone finally called him out on it.
May not be the right thing to do but if that team is truly going to change for the better it needs to be done. No more passengers on the bus.

I dont trust a word Valentine says-ever. That said what I see happening here is a double whammy..The club has not bought into what Valentine is selling and conversely, Valentine, being the constant self-promoter-does not care. They dont have the talent on the feild to contend, so it won't be a huge issue, but that is the way I see it.

Seriously?
If every Red Sox player had Youkes intensity and commitment to the game, there would be a fraction of the problems that this team had. I would much rather have a bunch of Yukes, than a bunch of passionless bums. Yea he gets pissed when he strikes out, but isn't that what Boston loves about their athletes?
Also, the only thing him and "Ells" had in common was that they were both injured. Jacoby if I remember correctly left the team and stayed home, and yes Youke complained and I can see why he would be annoyed. But then Youke got injured he put his money where his mouth was and traveled with the team until the end of the season.

I fully agree with you about Youk and his grating personality. I'm not a fan at all, and I never have been. One of my favorite moments in recent Red Sox history was when Manny slapped him around int he dugout a few years ago.
I just find several things Bobby V said to be questionable. Like one, why is he airing dirty laundry through the media? Isn't that Lucky Lucchino's job??
Secondly, how do you apologize if someone had to come to you? Kind of a contradictory thing there, isn't it? Either you said something you were sorry for and sought that person out to say you were sorry, or you didn't. If they come to you, it rings hollow. Like you didn't have a problem with saying it, and only apologized after the fact because the guy got bent out of shape about it. So either call the guy out and stick with it, or don't. No need to backtrack and say you apologized after the fact.
Either he's slacking or he's not. Pick one and stick with it, Bobby.
IMO, there is a difference between being tough on the players, and airing it out to the medial.
I love the Valentine apologists saying "Isn't this why they brought him in?". I don't think it is a successful strategy to call your players out to the media. I am not for excuse making, but handle your issues in house and give the media as little as possible to pontificate about, christ.
From all reports it seems like Francone became soft within the lockeroom, but I always liked his style of not calling his players out via the papers. It comes off as very Sinden esque.
