I remember Carlson playing with an edge when he played in juniors as well. Things change when you get to the NHL, players are bigger and more physical.
Wrt to the World Juniors. Trouba was a 17 year old, with limited experience, going against generally bigger players. Carlson was almost 20 having experience in professional hockey(Hershey). Carlson wasn't even that physical from what I recall.
I wonderer if Ross & Co. might reach a little with the second 1st rounder for someone that could be slotted later in the 1st..well not that I think about they seem to go BPA not withstanding that 2005 snake draft.
I'd hope, if they like a guy more than others, they trade back and take him later rather than making an obvious reach. Picking up an extra 2nd or 3rd could be very useful.

Especially if we pass on Boston's for trade bait next season with av's pick

I could maybe see it with Hertl or Frk. Otherwise, yeah, trade back. Especially if they have one of the power wingers targeted. The depth through 50ish seems decent so another mid-second would be useful. 16 seems like a real good spot, though. The second tier extends into range and shouldn't necessitate digging deep for upside.
This site is streaming every U18 match. I hope to check out a lot of the Sweden team and hopefully get a good look at Gaunce & Canada.
I'd love Collberg at 16. Supposedly his favorite team is the Capitals?

By "juniors," I believe he was referring to Carlson's time in the USHL and OHL, not the WJHC.
Any chance we paired both those firsts, to move up? While I am intrigued with 2 firsts, I am just curious how much of a move up it could bring. Anyone you really want that would be in range?
There isn't. I'd prefer securing two pretty good players over one more heralded one, even among the lottery candidates. Depth is hugely important in making any push some year and they should be well positioned to add two players from a pretty decent second tier. Not great but pretty solid.
The closest thing to Couturier that may be in range for the Caps would be Faksa I think but both Faksa & Gaunce seem to have that sort of two-way maturity to their game. One of the two should be available at 11, if not both. It's what makes them strong fits for potentially being fast-tracked as NHL centers initially in a bottom six role (similar to Couturier, albeit maybe not at 18) with the potential to steadily move up thanks to their instincts. My lone concern there would be this team's shoddy skill/instinct development. I think that's probably the single biggest requirement in any coach given this team's internal development preference and it's where Hunter's junior background belies any apparent strength in the area.
Nonetheless, adding that sort of versatility in a center prospect along with a defenseman like Maatta or winger like Collberg seems like the way to go. If their pick was more in the early 20's range I'd be much more inclined to package it to move up.
Thanks Rod. So you think maybe 3 or 4 spots. I figured it wouldn't be many in a deep draft. Not that I even know if it is considered one.
I know the golden rule is BPA but I hope we start addressing our center depth via the draft since we can't seem to address it via FA or trades. Maybe we will be in luck and the BPA for one of the 2 is a C.
U18s: Finland/Canada coming up at noon. Teravainen centering the top line for Finland. Sounds like Gaunce was dropped down to the third line. Some pretty good 2013-eligible players for both sides as well (Shinkaruk, Pulock, Nurse, Rychel, Barkov, Ristolainen).
Finland beats Canada 4-2. Teravainen with two assists. If this game was indicative of Gaunce's motor generally then having Girgensons ahead of him is no stretch at all. Laughton was more impressive from a work ethic standpoint and was seemingly trusted more by the coaching staff.
Been finally digging into some video and other info. Really liking the mobility, physicality, and decision making from trouba. Something tells me I'm going to be pissed come draft day.
Scared of TT. Don't really like late risers. But the fact that this kid is barely eligible and plays in men's league already calms those fears a bit. Seeing stat lines like above as 1C on a team beating Canada does as well.

Shinkaruks a special player he's definitely going to challenge for first overall
