Islanders get 2 forwards with skill who would jump into the top 9. Kadri and Tavares have chemistry from London days and WJC. Okposo who slide down to play with the 2nd line. Colborne slots in Reasoner spot on the 3rd line. Schenn becomes at least #3 on the depth chart for the Isles
Leafs get back to back picks to either get Murray and one of the forwards or gets 2 forwards of the top 5. Neiderretier steps in on Grabo's line.
Way off base for either team?
What is the point?
Leafs give up our two top prospects plus a current young top 4 dman with loads of potential as a shutdown guy.
Isles give up one of their top 2 prospects and a top 4 pick.
I don't see the benefit of either team doing it. What reasons do they have to do it?
For the Islanders to even consider trading their 4th overall pick outright, the Leafs would have to trade Jake Gardiner and add to him.
Would the Leafs trade the 5th overall pick outright for a package from let's say Ottawa that would include:
Jared Cowen + Mika Zibanejad and Nikita Filatov?
Most likely the Leafs would say no, as the Islanders would say no to Schenn + Kadri + Colborne.
Our assets are not bad, but the fact is a team that is rebuilding tends to keep picks and the Islanders don't want to add extra salary of $3.6 million for a shut down defenseman in Luke Schenn. The Islanders are a team that wants value on a good player and someone like Jake Gardiner would have to be considered in this type of deal.
Do you mean "and" or "or". For Cowen and Zibanejad I would trade the 4th pick
If Murray was off the board I probably would trade the pick straight up for Zibanejad
Yes and Zibanejad.
What makes Zibanejad such a hot commodity than say Kadri? Both are rated as 8.0C on hockey's future and Zibanejad was decent for Djurgårdens IF. He had a good World Junior, but other than that he still has room for growth just like Kadri. If the Islanders would not trade the 4th overall pick for the Leafs package, then its a double standard if they would for the Ottawa package. Just don't see it as plausible, but stranger things have happened.

If Murray is off the boards I hope we pick Forsberg. I think a debate could be made who is better between Forsberg and Zibanejad.
In terms of why I would rank Zibanejad ahead of Kadri though is at this point in time I think he has a much higher upside.
Kadri as I said above to me just seems like somebody who is at the same level of a Josh Bailey. To make even a better comparison to a player not on the Islanders, I think both the guys(Kadri and Bailey) would probably have less value the Sam Gagner on the trade market. All three of these guys though are guys who haven't really lived up to potential yet but could have a breakthrough in a year or 2.

The only way we will truly know how either player pans out is in a few years time. I agree it is too early to put the jury out on either player. Kadri doesn't get much love around these parts but he still has the potential to do well and is putting up decent numbers in the AHL while still developing. I believe Zibanejad will become a good NHL player, but he will take more than two years to develop into a regular NHL player. Either package is there to make deals, but for a potential to draft an all-star or franchise player in 4th overall it's hard to trade a pick of that magnitude for players with only potential going for them at this time.

I don't think Snow wants a package for his lottery pick.
From what the NY press has indicated,he wants 1 player back, with star potential.

I am not saying Kadri will be a bad player but as each year ticks after they leave junior and a guy is still considered a "prospect" generally his value goes down when it comes to forwards.
As I said I do think Sam Gagner is a good measuring board for Kadri(and Bailey's value) although I guess the counter argument would be look what Turris got(who before this season i would put in the same boat as the 3 guys I mentioned)

If I am the Leafs and the Sens came to me with that package I am all over it. Cowen is already in the NHL and is a know commodity Zibanejad had a sniff and you know what you have. Filatov is a waste but put a pick instead and its a go.
Anytime you have 2 top level players vs 1 top level player and he is not franchise altering player you make that deal every day.

Phil Kessel it is then.

Bryan Murray who drafted Zibanejad really wanted Kadri the year before.
In all seriousness, the Islanders would not take a package deal like CREW99AW has pointed out, so its a moot point to even be discussing it.
Watch Nelson end up the best of the bunch(which would be funny since he completely gets ignored on any top prospect lists). I will say this about Strome I am slightly disappointed he didn't get more points this year but on the bright side he seems to be having a better playoffs. A trip to the Memorial cup definitely will increase his stock
Except lead the entire NHL in hits by a dman, two years in a row.
How's Bailey?
i think bailey is a very useful player for the nyi. i am "fortunate" enough to watch A LOT of leaf games and i think schenn stinks. that's about as nice as i can say it.
I think the value isn't bad but I don't want to trade Nino. I think had a rough break this year and is only 19. I still believe he has 1st line power forward potential

Everytime I watch Schenn play it seems like he makes at least 2 terrible turnovers. He just seems to make some bad decisions with the puck.

Hear, hear! A Leafs fan that actually talks sense!! 1927, I really like your posts because you actually see what tons of other Leafs fans don't.
To aquire a top pick like the 4th (or 5th for that matter) the buying team would actually have to include something of real value to the other team, and outside of Gardiner or Kessel the Leafs really haven't got what the Islanders want or need. Giving up Kessel for the 4th is out of the question so Gardiner is the most likely option there is.
Depending on who is off the board by the time Isles pick I can see them trading down and do a deal with Burke but then it'll be a deal like the 2008 one just involving picks.

If Snow feels his guy will still be on the board at #6 and if
Galchenyuk or Grigs are on the board at #4 and Burke wants to flip picks,I'd hope Snow would talk to the Ducks first at #6.
Leafs have been trying to get an elite #1 center for yrs.No interest in helping an another eastern conference team get stronger.

Of course he will but ultimately it depends on who the Islanders want and whatever offers they get from other teams. If the Leafs outmatch the Ducks then they will go with that but I also feel that they may move down like they did in 2008 and end up with the two Washington picks and a few lower picks in the process.

I agree any moves will depend on who the isles target, who their guy is and how far down they can move, without losing him to another team.
I disagree that we'll see a repeat of 2008.
Isles went into that draft saying they had a depleted prospect pool and were starting a major rebuild. They wanted to come out of that draft with as many warm bodies as they could.I think the isles came out of that draft with about 10-11 prospects.
In the three next drafts,Snow would have trade talks about his lottery picks, but would choose to stay at his draft spot and use his pick.He choose quality over quantity:Tavares/Nino/Strome
Snow's been stockpiling prospects for 4 straight drafts. He's not looking to grab as many warm bodies as he can.Imo he'd rather have 1 young star, then 2-3 solid 2nd/3rd liners.

I also believe that this draft is too weak for Snow to consider hoarding picks like in 2008, which turned out to be a great draft for the Isles, but if they think they can safely move down a few spots and still get their guy then they will pick up more picks in process, without hoarding.
If they decide to move down, then perhaps we can see arepeat of the 2009 draft where they moved up a few times to get De Haan.
