The Business of HockeyDiscuss the financial and business aspects of the NHL. Franchise sales, valuations, TV contracts, ratings, expansion, relocation, the CBA and work stoppage discussion goes here.
In terms of last night's game, Panthers raised ticket prices from the regular season (in some cases fairly significantly) and SSE was charging $20 for parking that was previously "free". Beer prices were also jacked up (have they no shame!)
I can't vouch for how many seats were empty in the arena, but in my lower bowl section, I didn't see any.
As long as Tallon is running hockey operations, Yormark is selling ice cubes to eskimos and Viner keeps his fellow owners from meddling too much, things should be fine.

Laus723, for me this is not just hockey. It's 200 people at the Marlins game. It's a whole section of seats empty at the heat games and a historic franchise like the Miami Dolphins having blackouts.
Miami is a crap sports market.
I agree about the hockey though. But that does not explain the other three sports.
Was winnipeg a crap hockey town? was quebec a crappy hockeytown? Is long island a crap hockey town?
Montreal cant sustain a baseball team so they are a crap sports town?
Friday night the panthers had 19000 plus, the heat sold out once again and the marlins have averaged 33000 per game.
Hockey is lucky to be in this amazing market here in paradise.
Yes they are. Every other league except the NHL and CFL have failed. Even the Alouettes don't sell out.
Only baseball failed badly in Montreal. Impact(MLS) are doing great. The Habs is the #1 pro Hockey team in the worlds. The only F1 succesfull race in NA in the last 30 years is in Montreal. Great tennis tournament there. Great Nascar race there. Sports does not stop at MLB. The Alouettes have sold out for 15 years. MLB is the worst balance league in the world.
Florida Panthers team is losing money hand over fist, the ownership group that controls the Panthers rakes in money like no tomorrow. They control the team, the arena, and(if I remember correctly) most of the land surrounding the arena. As long as, at the end of the year, when all of the money is added up you're not in the red then they're doing it right.
And, as people have already said, yes the arena was pretty empty last night but when the team has been utter crap for so many years can you really blame the current owners that they didn't sell out? After this season their attendance should be up a considerable margin next year.

CHL and AHL have also failed, and the Impact are relatively new. The Alouettes have had sellouts in a small stadium of 20,000, yet when renovations are done and capacity increased to 25,000 they fail to sellout. Of course, I hear that a lot of people from quebec like the patriots, so maybe the football fanbase is split between the two teams?
I don't follow Nascar or F1, but I wouldn't necessarily call them sports in the same sense that I do for hockey, football, etc.

And you call baseball a sport has half the players are fat and there is no contact in it?
Quebec and Winnipeg relocated. Toronto hasn't sipped from Lord Stanley's Cup since the league grew past six teams. Vancouver has never won a Cup. Edmonton, the team that traded Gretzky, has dominated the Draft Lottery the past three years. The Montreal friggin' Canadiens, the NY Yankees of the sport, couldn't find a local buyer and it was feared they might be the next to relocate to the US back around 2001.
The NHL really needs to re-examine the 'Great White North' experiment. Clearly hockey isn't working in Canada.

One of those wrongs have been righted, and the other one is on the verge of being righted as well

Hahahaha, You're so funny and original!
Let's just say, like Bettman said, that the errors from the past are being erased.
And that it feels great to live in a safe, prosperous city with full employment rather then a bankrupt city like Glendale.

And leave it at that.
Now, now. He made a good example of what happens when only partial items are highlighted, the ones that put things in as negative light as possible. Omission isn't always intentional, but I like to think that having these debates makes it less likely that relevant info will in fact be omitted.

haters will hate.
Cheers.
Hey, like I said, the hockey arguement is overzelous but as far as the other three, when I turn on the TV I don't see butts in the seats. I want to see people in stadium, just IMO.

No Premier league soccer is . And even if it is baseball, has that stopped Milwaukee WI now?
Besides. Montreal has had three wacks at the CFL too. Montreal is a bad sports market too.
Again, one season doesn't negate 12 years. People still turn a cold shoulder to the Marlins after the 97 dismantling. Further, South Florida is made up of snowbirds and transplants who bring their love of their teams with them. Always been this way. I and my parents had season seats next to people who would be in a Panthers sweater all season except when "their other, true team" is in town. Then, this guy (couple, family) who were cheering for the Panthers a game ago with full gusto is now cheering against them even harder. It's weird.
Exactly. Attendance ALWAYS lags behind performance. Your talking about a team that has been one of the absolute worst in the NHL for over a decade. They are quickly recovering.
Not to mention the ownership group has said several times they are making money on the business venture they have going there. I am just not sure how people can seriously believe that the Florida Panthers are in ANY danger of moving

We have something similar going on here in Winnipeg Alot of hard core new Jets fans are 18-30 years old (as I imagine most fans are, it's the NHL's prime market) so they were 2-14 years old when the Jet 1.0 moved. So all of them had adopted new teams and growing up with a team makes it very very hard to change teams in an instant. Plenty have, but many have hard time letting go. I wore my Jets jersey to every game EXCEPT the Kings game where I wore my Kings jersey (with a Jets hat) because it was hard for me to let go of a team I have cheered for my entire life.

I wonder how many other clubs use the Panthers' business model. Use the club to get the lease deal, then make your money on the other events the building can host, like concerts, NCAA tournament games, conventions, circuses and other forms of live entertainment.
It makes sense. I mean, there's no way more than half of the NBA is operating in the black strictly on what the clubs bring in, and I would suspect similar numbers for the NHL. That would allow the league to claim, "we've lost $X million, we need to restructure the CBA" without constantly moving or losing member clubs.

Ellipsis Dots... for example, Dracula might say "I only drink... wine". Well, we know what he was thinking and what was meant by his omission. If Charles Wang says "I need a resolution with Nassau County to the arena & development or I just dont know... lease expires in 2015" we can fill in those blanks as well. He does know, just not speaking publicly about it as of yet, and he knows we know what those plans might entail, omission deliberate.
When McCown or one of his guests states "the Florida Panthers MIGHT be facing a bankruptcy..." with the Ellipsis trailing into gamma voids without a projected course or pilot , then I for one completely discount the notion as being an absurdity. The facts on the ground completely belie the premise. There simply isnt any relevant contemporaneous information, proof, not even anecdotal second hand whispers of a rumor to support so ridiculous a supposition. You cant get away with that in a courtroom, you shouldnt be allowed to get away with it on-air, as a reporter writing for a media outlet of anykind...
