What was the whole "sit down yellow" chants about last night. I was at the game, but I couldn't make out what was being chanted.
Some guy sitting in the first row was wearing a yellow shirt and standing the whole game. While he wasn't actually in anyones line of sight, I think most were annoyed he wouldn't put the blue shirt on he was given to blend in with the crowd.

I don't see why this is a bad thing? It is what the NHL has trying to expand its fan base for years and looks like the efforts are finally paying off.
I wonder if the recent increase is more due to all the recent drama caused by Pittsburgh hatred. There has been a lot of press surrounding this, and as we know drama sells!
But I for one welcome anyone who wants to give hockey a chance!
It's not bad to grow the fan base..but I see bandwagoners as fans who like a team when they get good, then hop off at the first sign of suckage. **** those guys.
I've noticed that most people (usually on social networking sites) that start rooting for a team once they make the playoffs do not become fans for life or even after the playoffs are over. It's nice to see the support, but I can't stand it when they start spewing ignorance about a team or game they never watch.

The difference between the Rangers and other cities (Pittsburgh/Washington specifically) is that we have always had a solid fan base that sold out MSG regularly and follow the team on a regular basis. Penguins and Capitals could barley fill half the arena back in the early 2000's -- I remember I went to a game back at the old Verizon Center (I forgot the name back then), and the upper deck was actually closed off and half the crowd was cheering for the other team.
That doesnt explain why so many "true" Ranger fans get pissed off when fellow NY'ers jump on a bandwagon.
It does explain how a fanbase can go to **** while their franchise goes the way of tanking. But again, populations have to be considered when comparing Pittsburgh or DC to NYC.
Other than overt insecurities regarding your own fandom, I dont understand why so many people get pissed off at the "bandwagon fans" especially considering our location. This team plays in the biggest city in the world, so what else do you expect?

If this thing rolls through to June, you young guys will be amazed. There will be players on with Letterman and Kelly, lead stories on the 6 o'clock news and Francessa will be broadcasting live from The Garden every day. No kidding.

While not essential, it's nice to get some attention.
And there are many stereotypical sports fans I've talked to who only watch during the playoffs for hockey. Many hockey fans will only do the same for MLB, NBA, etc.
In the end, it doesn't really matter, we all know who the hardcores are, and maybe there are a few more converts along the way.

As nice as that sounds, its shallow attention. If NYR wins the cup, all the media attention ends as soon as the rangers put in a "meh" season, or even before that. I wish NYC was a real hockey town. Not a bandwagon in the playoffs kinda town...

I don't believe there are any real hockey towns in the united states. All the hardcore ones are pretty much in Canada. Its pretty much all they have.
I haven't seen any bandwagoners yet. And let's not all get in head of ourselves here and start complaining about them. Let's win something first.

One of my oldest friends has always casually rooted for the Rangers but now he's all into it posting LGR on his facebook and all... I honestly think that's cool... good to grow the sport... its not a total bandwagon move that way hahah

Don't take offense to it, it is the nature of NY sports. You guys are the big market hockey team here, play in the heart of NYC, and have had more recent success than the Isles and Devils. I, generally speaking, hate Ranger fans but I've also met some very cool ones and I think the insane amount of bandwagonners makes your fanbase come off as extremely obnoxious to other teams fans.
Well, some could be converts to hockey: That's how you get new fans. Others, I do agree, just go with the flow.
Just had a debate with a friend of mine today and I said exactly this. There's really two ways you gain fans:
1) You grow up watching the team because someone in your family is a fan.
2) There's a good team out there and you decide to start paying attention to them. Sure, most of the people who do this may never follow them again or stop once they have a bad season, but there's still that small group that decides to be lifers.
As an Isles fan, I can say that almost all of the fellow fans I have met are either following this team because they were "bandwagoners" back in the 80's or their family introduced them to it (as someone born in '83, I fall into the latter group... All the pain, none of the glory. Thanks a lot, Dad)
Main point: 95% of bandwagoners will drop off once the good times end. The other 5% will become just as diehard as you guys are. And those bandwagoners do spend a decent amount of $$ on jerseys and such, cause Hank is just sooooo dreamy , so there is some good that comes out of it. They give our league some money and they become walking billboards.
But I do have to say, when the Isles made the playoffs back in '02 (for the first time since '93-'94) the bandwagoners coming out of the wood work really pissed me off*. F them. I lived through all the **** years and that was MY TIME to be happy. You want to join? Pay your damn dues fist.
*Note: Mets fans are allowed to bandwagon. They've suffered enough.

Our bandwagoners are obnoxious too, we just haven't seen them in the better part of a decade...

Yep, everyone's suddenly making Rangers facebook posts. People that I know never watch hockey texting me about the Rangers. People at work talking about the Rangers. So funny.
Same here man...alot of FB posts from ppl who dont watch hockey,from girls who all the sudden swear they love the rangers,ppl texting me left n right..

Fair enough, but we have a very large and very loyal core fanbase. So to sit there and make it out like all our fanbase is are a bunch of bandwagoners is complete and utter bullsh**. A lot of that obnoxiousness you talk about comes from fans at Ranger-Devil and Ranger-Islander games. And not for nothing, you get it on both sides, that's number 1. So for all of you who think it's just the Rangers fan that's being obnoxious, wake up, cause the opposing fan has just as many obnoxious d**ks. Number 2, as someone who has been to tons of games at the Garden, and tons of games at the Prudential Center, the one thing I have witnessed more than anything is that Rangers fans that go to games at the Rock are NOT of the same ilke that go to games at the Garden. Most of them are young, d**che bag idiots that are there to get drunk and start fights. They get to 1 or 2 games a year, can't afford to go to the Garden, consider this their Rangers game, and feel its cool to be a d*ckbag in the Devils arena. Trust me, I've seen it. And I hate these little jerkoffs cause it makes MY fan base as a whole look bad. And I have a vested interest in that cause I am married to a Devils fan, and I have to constantly defend my fanbase to her and her friends, most of whom are very cool people.
