What a day for Matt Cain. He made that look way too easy and man was that fun to watch. If only it wasn't the freaking pitcher. Oh well. Perfect game would have been nice, what he did do was incredible.
Funny, after each one of the Giants shutouts, A's pitchers later that night have combined to shutout their opponent. This time, Bartolo Colon outdueled King Felix and Weeks hit his 2nd.

A's are playing well considered what they have and the situation they are in. It isn't pretty at times, but I do enjoy watching Cespedes and Weeks be the top hitters on the team.

The hitters will get better. Weeks is around .200, as is Crisp and a few other guys. The bullpen is stout, the real question is if the starters will be able to maintain their hot start. If so, this team will be much better than what most outsiders expected.
small sample size, but the A's haven't played anyone real good yet. The Mariners and Royals? not so much.
I've always heard that term, "small sample size" being tossed around when talking about Baseball. When does the small no longer remain small. Don't get me wrong, I agree its too early to really notice trends, but in a season you're going to have peaks and valleys given it's length. It's just a matter of having more peaks than valleys.
Not good news if true about B-Weezy. Luckily, this'll give Sergio Romo a chance in the role. He's definitely ready for that but the question will be who replaces him in his spot.
Can anyone speak as to whether there are signs at AT&T or O.Co re: Sharks? Are they posting playoff scores there?
One thing you have to give St. Louis area credit for is their support of the Blues. On the telecast tonight, they showed that at the Cardinals Stadium they have a "Let's go Blues" sign. Chris Carpenter was at the Blues game tonight and got a HUGE ovation.
Meanwhile, AFAIK (And what I've heard, but if people can supplement, I'd appreciate it), the Giants and A's don't even acknowledge the Sharks. Tonight, with Sharks playoffs Game 2 on, Giants are honoring Alex Smith. Yesterday I was listening for a bit to Tierney and Davis on 95.7 The Game, and on Thursday they were at the Warriors game instead of watching the Sharks PLAYOFF game. Seriously, they better ****ing be AT the Sharks game Monday. Why even bother listening to "The Game" if they aren't even giving enough due to the big "Game" in town right at the present moment? From what I understand, during these playoffs, Damon Bruce on KNBR is talking more Sharks than Tierney and Davis on The Game. That's pretty sad.
Can you say epic fail? It's about time the ENTIRE Bay Area got behind a major pro team that plays in SJ. The Niners, probably the biggest team in the Bay, is moving to Santa Clara.

20 or so games is a good sample size. But 3 series is just too small to tell how good or bad a team is, especially when it's against the same team twice.
Rafa Marquez of the Red Bulls grabbed and tackled Shea Salinas in their box, broke his collar bone and kicked him in the head for good measure. Of course the refs didn't call it since it happened in the box.

They faced Felix Hernandez in 3 of their first 8 games. Giants haven't seen a pitcher of his quality yet, let alone 3 times.
Ian Kennedy and Daniel Hudson are not bad pitchers...I also was not comparing them to the Giants at all...
Sucks to hear about Shea. I was down on him when I saw they signed him, he wasn't that good before. But since it was Rafa Marquez who did it, no surprise nothing was called. Great start for the Quakes though.
I agree about Burriss, I'm sure he'd happily take a beaning. They're lame if they're butthurt over that moderate celebration. It's a walk off on opening weekend, dry your (delicious) tears, Pittsburgh.
Edit: Though I wouldn't complain I'd a brawl were started, as I'm all fired up after the Sharks game and wanna see someone get their face punched.

The Giants won't be at the Sharks game on Monday, they kinda have their own game to play. And there's really nothing to gain from having the Giants sit somewhere to watch a hockey game on TV. They had an off day, and the Warriors happened to be playing, so they went. Pretty simple really.
As for the Bay Area getting behind a team in SJ, it will never happen. There's 7 million people here, and they're very diverse, resulting in diverse fan bases too. The whole Bay didn't get behind the Giants when they won the World Series in '10, nor did they get behind the Niners last year. Its a result of having so many teams that the fans get stretched thin.

I know the Giants aren't off now so they can't attend (and I said nothing about Giants going to a Warriors game, I mentioned Tierney and Davis of 95.7 The Game going to a Warriors game instead of watching Sharks/Blues Game 1, no excuse for that), but the Blues are the sole NHL team in the St. Louis Metro and they have a Let's Go Blues sign at the stadium. The Sharks are sole Bay Area NHL team and neither Giants nor A's have a sign for the Sharks. Or anything else. When the Giants are in the playoffs, Sharks have posted stuff on FB supporting them, even though Giants WS conflicts with Sharks opening of the season. The Giants and Niners, both of which I follow on FB, don't say squat about the Sharks, let alone playoffs (*maybe* they would with a SCF appearance, maybe).
As to Giants in 2010, there are two MLB teams, of course the entire Bay isn't behind the Giants. Or A's. Or Niners. Or Raiders. But the Warriors and the Sharks are the Bay Area's lone NBA and NHL teams, and it's getting ridiculous that people don't support the team in SJ. I have a feeling the Sharks would get more people in the Bay behind them if they played in Oakland or SF, and that's sad.
Like I've said many times before, here in the horrible DFW metro, people don't make a distinction between which teams play in Dallas (Mavs/Stars) or Arlington (Cowboys/Rangers). While I agree the Bay has too many sports teams (should be one per league, like DFW, whihc has similar population numbers), fans need to get used to pro teams in the South Bay with the Niners moving there.
I am ranting because I get the feeling that these playoffs in particular are drawing lower interest in the Bay versus previous years. Have you noticed this at all (meaning this year vs. previous years?)? They still have Sharks playoff tickets available! (I know, I get the emails). Maybe it has something to do with them being a 7 seed and that horrible slump, but there used to be a time when Bay Area interest in the Sharks increased when playoffs started regardless of seed, but this year, it feels like the idiot casual fan doesn't want to give a damn until they win a few rounds (or even get to the SCF?). Very sad.
P.S. From one of our Blues visitors:
Quote:
Overall, yesterday was a great game for me, couldn't get tickets but some local movie theaters are showing the games with free admission, and we had a crowd of over 200 there which made for a cool atmosphere. If you guys have anything similiar, check it out, makes for a cool experience.
When I read stuff like that, it saddens me that NOTHING like this exists in the Bay for the Sharks. Makes me jealous. I hope to live a long life and hope that on my deathbed, the Sharks will have moved up the chain of teams supported in the Bay Area (at least leaps and bounds over the Warriors), but it hurts to know that it probably won't happen unless drastic changes that we can't anticipate occur (such as the Niners moving to the South Bay and the A's finally get into SJ somehow spark an increased interest in Sharks).

I would love viewing parties where I can go and be with other sharks fans and maybe make new friends. I remember one year (The year the Sharks lost to Dallas in the 4th overtime) I went to Dave and Busters for a few games and while the outcome wasn't nice, the atmosphere was. I agree it was nice to see the "Go St Louis Blues" at Busch Stadium, but the reason it wouldn't happen here is because the bay area as a region just isn't a hockey region. Hell, there is more undying love for the Warriors than there is for the sharks and that just blows my mind as to why.
