I don't know about the whole mass exodus thing. Bittner played for Crookston, a tiny little town with very little hockey relevance within the MN high school league. Never seen the kid play, but if you want to develop at all as a player, its best to get out of single A, or at least onto a ranked one. His dad(or uncle maybe?) was the coach and I'm sure transferring to a different school just wouldn't be considered a viable option. I don't see how this is a league problem and not just personal circumstances where playing for your tiny hometown won't advance your hockey career.
Just looking at his points and Crookston's ridiculously weak schedule though I have to ask why people think he is noteworthy? Just size? He was middle of the road point wise on a team that didn't win a single game in one of the weaker sections in the state, 15 goals and 5 coming in a game against a team not from MN. Not trying to diminish him as a player but if anyone can describe him more and why he is coveted, I would appreciate it.
Weak schedule? Sure they had some stinkers...but TRF, EGF, Warroad, Roseau, Moorhead, Red Wing, st cloud cathedral, Duluth Marshal, Blake, Bemidji...far from a weak schedule.
It's disappointing that Minnesota is basically turning into California where kids that can't get NCAA/USHL interest at that age feel they have to go with Plan B, but that's the result of a pretty mismanaged system.
Are you really implying that these kids did not have options? Bittner was invited to the NTDP camp, suggesting that he is among the top 16 year olds in the country (and he performed well at the camp btw) and Iverson has long been considered a blue-chip recruit...Every NCAA team was aware of both players and they would have had considerable interest from elite schools had they chosen that route. Another player, though not from Minny but close enough, Schoenborn was a first round pick of the Lincoln Stars of the USHL and also had a lot of interest from several NCAA programs....look, I understand you are upset at these kids choosing the CHL route, but please use a little bit of honesty when discussing the reasons why they chose that route....doing so would do much for your credibility and the reputation of that little blog you run.

"Interest" is one thing. An actual scholarship offer is a completely different thing. None of those kids had actual scholarship offers, because they were far too risky at this age. Portland can take that risk because it's easy to cut or trade them when it doesn't work out. That works out great Portland. I'm not sure it works out best for those kids, but that was their decision and they'll have to live with it.

You know very well that no 15 and 16 year olds are given actual scholarship offers because it would violate NCAA rules.....heck schools are not able to initiate direct contact with players until the second semester of their junior year in high school. The reality is that these kids were high-end players who certainly could have given and received a verbal to just about any D-1 school with the promise of an offer once they were of age....
It wouldn't surprise me that he returns (him and Siebenaler both), but I don't see a link anywhere on the site. I know he was being considered for the final forward spot, but I didn't think he'd make it.
If you go to the Barons site and read the download that says Barons Midget Majors Forming Championship Team you'll see where it says Magyar signed up for next year.

Eh, not a single team in the top 25 this year, and Bittner didn't have great point totals in most of those games anyway. Just wondering if anyone can describe his play a bit more, it would be cool to see a guy succeed from one of the smaller hockey programs.

Yeah, there seems to be conflicting reports on Magyar which make me think he indeed is not a commit. WeissFC, do you know who the 3 forward commits are that we're missing?

That hasn't stopped over a dozen kids their age or younger from committing to NCAA schools. Those kids didn't because nobody gave them an offer.

I have seen lists, but off the top of my head I don't know of any of the two (They still have one spot open. Magyar was in the running for that final spot.) that are missing.
I do know that defenseman Ryan Collins from Benilde is missing from your list.
Sorry I can't be of more help. I should have saved the list that I got. I'm almost solely focused on 2012 NHL Draft work right now.

First off, no school could have given them an offer as they are not allowed to. Secondly, young players must contact respective schools themselves and then give a verbal, which is an non-binding agreement...meaning it isn't worth squat.
All three of these could have committed to a school of their choosing as dozens of programs would have loved to have their services....you are talking about 3 high end prospects who could have punched their ticket to any program they wanted to.....while all USHL teams would have given their left lungs to have any one of them.
They chose a different route and you are trying to make it sound that they had little to no choice as no NCAA/USHL teams were interested....an utterly ridiculous notion!
He seems like someone who would fall like Reid Boucher did last year. He doesn't have the most impressive stats but he is a freshman. Is this his second year of eligibility?

Ok, you're the expert. Throw out some names of schools that offered any of those kids a scholarship.

Same old anti chl . College teams have their way to move kids. They de-commit to kids all the time that don't perform in the USHL. They don't renew scholarships when they are in the program All just the same... If they want to move a player they can.

You know as well as I do that NoDak was after Schoenborn hard....you also know (for the umpteenth time) that NoDak could not directly offer Schoenborn anything as of yet because of NCAA rules and unless Shoenborn was willing to initiate contact and express an interest, there was little NoDak could do. There were a myriad of programs after Bittner and Iverson was being closely followed by the Gophers, and when I say closely followed, I mean they would have offered him a scholarship had he expressed an interest in them.
Are you going to try and perpetuate a bald face lie that these players were not good enough for the USHL/NCAA??? Little wonder why your site has the reputation it does.
Interesting thing coming up for this summer has to do with draft eligible FW Lukas Sutter. Was born in the US, has played for the Americans, including at last year's U-18's. Wondering if Hockey Canada might convince him North, considering he's a dual citizen.
He'll have to decide at some point, considering invites for WJHC camp this summer for Canada are likely floating around out there already for some kids.

Has Sutter lived in and played hockey in the US for two full years at some point since his 10th birthday? If not, the IIHF probably won't let him play for the US so there'd be no point for the US to bring him to camp.

That's a good question and I don't know the answer.
All I know is that he has been asked to determine which country he wants to be eligible to play with going forward. Not sure if it was Hockey Canada that asked him or the US, but I know it's out there.
