Sorry, wasn't my intention on that, those were prettymuch the goalie rankings from that year that I remember seeing as being the "consensus" in front of Ward before the draft. Ward and Lehtonen, from that entire crop, have been the only 2 to become starters, both arguably top 10 in the league.
Do you really think Lehtonen is in the top 10 goalies in the nHl right now? That is the biggest reach I have read today on this topic.

Ok. Sorry for the misunderstanding on my part.
Uncle Eugene, that was actually pretty funny.

Not in any particular order:
Lundqvist
Thomas
Quick
Luongo
Ward
Rinne
Fleury
Price
Brodeur
Smith
Kiprusoff
That's 11 guys who would rank ahead of him. That leaves out Howard/Bryzgalov/Anderson/Miller/Hiller/Halak/Backstrom/Rask for whom reasonable arguments could be made to put them ahead of Lehtonen.
Note that the Bruins initially used their 2nd round pick to draft Yuri Alexandrov. Thankfully for them, Lucic was still available 50th overall.
Anyways, here's Pierre McGuire's reaction to the Habs drafting Carey Price 5th overall.
Very interesting clip for a few reasons. And yes, Pierre McGuire is besides himself. Several things come to mind: if I'm Price, I'd thank Gainey for his support big-time. Of Bob McKenzie's what-ifs actually 2/3 are not horrible- Staal, Kopitar and Brule. And somehow, Jaroslav Halak also enters the equation, as he will always with Price, as he is mentioned by Gainey as part of the team's depth.
So perhaps the needs question can still be asked? Although their complaints focused on Theodore, Huet and Yann Danis, with the magic of hindsight, Halak would have been good enough. But...who knows if they would have drafted Kopitar or Staal instead? Pouliot who went #4 or Brule are just as likely.
1996 Entry 13 1 Derek Morris D Regina Pats [WHL] 1005 87 309 396 927
CSS had him somewhere in the 3rd and THN didn't even rate him.
I remember watching and the TV guys making a huge deal out of him being picked. If anyone had told those guys that in the next 16 years Morris would play 1000 NHL games, put up nearly 400 points and be 8th in scoring among all '96 draft picks they would have tried to get you committed.
Forsberg was supposed to be a very late early 2nd round pick and the Flyers picked him th. Aaron Ward was picked before Forsberg that year I believe. Barry Fraser who I think was an Oiler scout said, "If anyone had the guts, Forsberg, would be the 1st overall pick"
buffalo fans were about to commit mass suicide when we selected myers over teubert.
I thought Myers was a high risk, high reward type pick. When the Islanders kept trading down in 2008 I was hoping they took him(and I was just going on the theory he would be a big crease clearing guy)
All that being said wasn't he expected to go like 10-12ish?
Devin Setoguchi is another guy who was taken earlier then expected.
Yeah he was the first guy I thought of when I saw this thread. No one had him as a top 10 pick and I'm not even sure he was projected as a first rounder.
