I think your logic runs out where Gretzky being an exceptional player makes it more okay to have a unique number.

How about 39?
* Honors oneof the recent greats
* Flips RNH's 93. Seeing 39 and 93 on the ice at once, filling nets would be cool.

I will lose all respect for horcoff, If he doesn't give it up. I would rather see yakupov wearing #10, then a overpaid useless piece of trash.

The captain of the team isn't going to give up his number for a rookie. It's just not how these guys think.

Weight was a great player, but I don't feel like he deserves to be honoured by the Oilers.

Yakupov, like any skater/non goalie, should refrain from wearing #1.

If there's an amnesty clause in the new CBA, I'm certain Horcoff will be bought out (they like the player, but it's clear to everyone including management that his contract is out of whack and could potentially cause problems down the line). If that happens, I think they'd just give him #10.
If Horcoff is still here next year, then I could see him wearing #96 for the same reason he wears 10 now. Bure's number.
I could also see him wearing #12 for his draft year as well.

Fixed that for you.
I don't know what it is, but I can't stand it when players wear #1. It doesn't even look right on punters.

He needs to go with an obscure number that pisses off the forum number police.
