If you're looking for how human nature fits in a medieval setting, banks, religions, etc... Go for Bakker (Prince of Nothing trilogy) and definitely Abercrombie (First Law Trilogy).

Erikson's great (to me), but in more of a no-compromise-gods-magic-epicness way than the "how the world works" like GRRM, Bakker or Abercrombie.

Literally 5 minutes ago I just finished the Last Argument of Kings. Amazing series thanks again for the recommendation. Eventually I'll read Best Served Cold and the Heroes, but I've got a bunch of other stuff to read 1st(mainly WOT which I know you love)

Just finished Dance with Dragons.
Spoil:
VARRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYSSSS

Such a better book than Feast for Crows, which was a chore to get through. It's getting really hard to keep up with all the characters that keep coming in, especially the Mereeneese and Yunkai with names that sound like a cat retching. One thing I'll say about this series is that I have no idea where it's going and at this point I don't think anything would surprise me.

Oh I don't not like WoT, it just that the others (Martin, Abercrombie, Erikson, Bakker, Lynch...) are more to my liking, the characters feel more "real" and natural, etc.

...

As for ADWD, I will say the Eastern plotline is disappointing to me, I couldn't care less about Hizdan mo Gizdan mo Schmizdan etc.

Also I can link a Victarion chapter that GRRM reads to an audience if ya'll want.

I've never read any of the sample chapters...are they actual chapters that will appear in the book...or will they change/be removed by the time the book is released?

Subject to change obviously but from what I've heard about A Dance With Dragon sample chapters before the book came out, they were pretty dead on.

There is an Arianne chapter floating about that I can't seem to find.

In addition, when the paper-back version of ADWD comes out, there will be a new sample chapter added at the end of that one as well.

Thanks, pretty much what I figured.

I can't decide if I want to read any of the samples or not. I didn't before DWD, but I only first read the books the year before it came out...so I wasn't waiting years for new info like other people were...

Is the Theon chapter good? Considering where it left off, definitely has potential...

Oh man you got my hopes up for a new sample chapter, but the Theon actually came out quite some time ago.

As for should you read them... I read all the sample chapters for ADwD, and they're basically just the opening chapters from a few of the POV so there's no real harm in it.

I listened until he said it was only part of a chapter...I'm good with sample chapters but part of a chapter would just be a **** tease.

Thats what I thought but when he read the chapter, it sounded like a whole one to me. Typical chapter ending style for GRRM so I assumed he said 'oh screw it' in his head and read the whole thing.

It totally seems like a full chapter. Only thing is it only takes him less than 10 minutes to read it. Might just be a shorter chapter, but I read at nearly the same pace as GRRM if not slightly faster since it is in my head, and the chapters in AFfC and ADwD took me roughly 15-20 minutes to read. Something I noted anyway. Most likely a short/slightly incomplete chapter just in the sense that there is more travel/detail involved.

Don't you dare say that!

He has the power of two gods, one on each arm. He's so Boss he'll kill everyone!

Can you tell he's one of my favorite characters? lol

I drive a lot for work and have the audio books on my ipod to listen to while driving. A chapter is about 40-60 minutes on average and I doubt any are less than 30 minutes.

Moving the "Best swordman" discussion going on the TV thread over here (where it belongs), I believe Arthur Dayne was considered the best swordsman in the realm. Currently living would probably be Garlan Tyrell.
