The Business of HockeyDiscuss the financial and business aspects of the NHL. Franchise sales, valuations, TV contracts, ratings, expansion, relocation, the CBA and work stoppage discussion goes here.
Exactly! I hope in a decade we can all look back and laugh that at some point in the 90's the NHL stupidly took teams away from true hockey markets like Québec, Winnipeg, Minnesota and Hartford toward the deep south.
You might want to consult:
a) Attendance records in Hartford vs Carolina, to clarify the meaning of "true hockey market".
b) Norm Green's biography, to fact-check the idea that "the NHL" moved the North Stars.
c) an atlas, to confirm whether Denver is in fact part of the "deep south"
Each team has discretion. The Coyotes keep the Jets numbers retired and even retired Howerchuck's after the move. The Hurricanes and Avalanche reissued the numbers that the Whalers and Nordiques had retired.
The Hurricanes continue to hold Howe's #9 out of circulation, which I find just a little awkward as far as not having it officially retired. But I guess they don't want to touch that particular chapter in team history.
Ley's #2 was only worn by Glen Wesley, who was himself a Whaler. He wore #20 in Hartford, and #26 before that in Boston, and I've never heard any mention of why he decided to take Ley's number when the chance arose. Anyway, it was re-retired after only a few years.
They've been pretty liberal about giving out #19, though. Most recently to the legendary Jiri Tlusty.
3 of them are unofficial retirements done by the Wolf Pack/Whale...but the fact they had 3 before even factoring in Ron Francis is laughable.
Francis, Dineen, Samuelsson were all still playing when the Whalers left, you could take numbers out of circulation, but you don't usually retire them if they're still playing. The first three were guys who played in the 70s for them. If the Whalers were still there, they all would have been retired anyways. Francis eventually had it done with the Hurricanes anyways.
While a lot of teams chose to distance themselves from the history of where they're coming from. I'll bet you dollars to donuts, if the Oilers had moved to Houston, the history would've went with them.
The Quebec Nordiques won the NE division in 1994-95 but did not raise the banner on the Avalanche's opening night for the 1995-96 season (that I am aware of). There is no banner in the Pepsi Center for the Nordiques' division win- I am sure of that.
The Colorado Avalanche do not recognise their prior existance as the Quebec Nordiques. For example, Joe Sakic's banner says he began playing for them in 1995. The Carolina Hurricanes took a similar view. The Phoenix Coyotes and Dallas Stars on the other hand, treat their past with honour and respect.

Well no kidding, especially since the Houston team would retain the name Oilers as the NFL team had already moved.

The Nords never had a Championship banner or either Conference. The premise itself is slim but I'd bet you the new Nords would indeed raise the Stanley Cup Championship banner.
They'd probably try and cheat and put the new Nords logo on it rather than the Coyotes.

We had 2 division championship when divisions still mattered in the playoffs, and the Avco Cup banner.
What if the Yotes actually go far and get a Western Champ or Cup Champ Banner.
Does Quebec City ignore those??
I don't think I would.....
I would.
If this happens, the Coyotes won the cup then relocated, the PHOENIX Coyotes won the cup playing in Glendale, Arizona wearing maroon and white COYOTE jerseys. Notice I didn't mention Quebec once. If Quebec did this, it would be VERY tacky imo. Let the city of Glendale raise the banner in August with the team who won it, in the arena within the city where they won it, and leave it there. Just like the Hartford Whaler banners still hang to this day in the Hartford Civic Center (or XL center or whatever it's called now). The history belongs more to the city than the franchise IMO.

Do the franchise records go back to the previous team? I know the Canes and Jets go back to the previous team, same franchise.
I'd assume they'll switch Quebec and Winnipeg when/if Phoenix moves.
Not that simple. If it was that simple, why didn't they make any effort to accommodate the Jets this year by switching them with a Central team? Being in the Southeast is a lot better for the Jets than the Pacific would be; If they were approached with this idea to help out the newly relocated Coyotes, I hope they'd tell the league to F-off. Even as a one year deal prior to proper realignment, they don't owe the NHL any favours.
As someone else posted, moving Vancouver to the Pacific makes the most sense. They still have to get Dallas out of there though. I'm alright with the Jets in the Northwest as long as the Canucks are out. No division should span 2 timezones in my opinion and it's completely do-able.

Geographically moving Vancouver to the Pacific makes the most sense but man if you take them out of the northwest it would be a pretty bad division next year. Colorado and Edmonton are on the rise though.
