Shanny also said that Alfredsson is concussed...I don't know how he can say that given that 1) as far as I know the Sens have never said he is and 2) there's a decent possibility that he could play which If he's concussed is miles away from what the nhl wants from a medical perspective
Boomer, carton and shanahan
'i've been okay guys. playoffss been interesting so far'
Why was hagelin so long?
'different plays. Biggest difference is in one play there's a head injury and concussion. No injury in the other. Doesnt mean one guy gets off. But we looked at the play between carkner and boyle. Carkner asked to fight. Boyle doesnt fight back. He hits him in the face, drops him, and hits him with 5 more punches in the arm, shoulder and back, not in the head. Thought that was excessive. Throwing punches on an unwilling participant. Gives him a game. Boyle stands up and doesnt miss a shift. Unfortunately with an elbow to the head-- i think he's a good kid-- alfredson has to leavea big game and an important game.
Would you change your opinion if alf plays?
Usually when i deal with an injury report these guys say to me it could be 1 day to 1 year. Its concussion. It's head injury. I dont pretend to be a doctor, but it's very clear that he's not safe. Otherwise he would've come back to play for the power play.
Whether he's back today or later in the week we just don't know, but i made the call whether it's long or short it' is a head injury
Premeditation for carkner-- understood only reason he was there was to go after boyle. To sucker punch him-- not know whether hes out or not and continue to do that then for dubi to get thrown out for 3rd man in. I guess there is leeway for them to not make that call is that okay?
Well yeah im not gonna throw ref under the bus. They usually wouldn't make that call. They have to make that call in the moment. They reviewed it. Idk if they would do that again. They have to make that right away. The actual rule is getting into an altercation. Doesn thave to be consentual. If youre the 3rd man in basically it's called.
Basically if the rule is called you let the refs handle it and break it up.
Here's where i think you get in trouble: youre handing out punishment not based on the action but based on the result of the action. In otherwords if alf pops back up or later in the game youre going to view the elbow differently because he didnt get back up.For instance if boyle doesnt get up you wouldve had to give carkner a 3 game suspension
Well youre right but idk if itll be 3 games there. I mean youre right the injury is the deciding factor.
boomer said alf should lay down for the penalty
But he knows to lay down, but if i thought this guy was faking he would've come back to the game right after and played on the power play... So im hoping that alfredsson is not faking it, but im hoping he's back the next game, but i can't decide.
We compare the hagelin hit to the bitz. It was a 2 game suspension because of a shoulder. We felt an elbow was more deliberate.
Chris phillips through an elbow at ryan callahan's head.No he didn't. It's not the same type. I mean i went through this with the rangers. In my department we look at this in depth. And we decide to what degree. It's never black and white. It's to what degree. The hit on callahan is not even remotely the same degree as on alfredsson. Is that cause cally didnt get hurt?
No it's a shoulder hit to the body. I don't think those two hits are even in the same degree. Worth of a penalty, but not the same degree..'the shea weber zetterburg incident headshot'
Shanny making upset sounds
You know i looked at that one and i'm not happy with that play, but i feel this is the case during the season. If people feel i screwed up then they feel like i should keep that consistency. It's elevates the playoffs. Game 1 and 2 is different from 6 and 7. I investigated that hit and called detroit i just think he pushed his face into the glass. I was close to a 1 game suspension and when i talked to detroit they said the player was fine, but i feel it was a fine arguement. And a $2500 is as high as we can fine a playeryeah and its a nominal fine in the big pictureguy just told off shanny about how the injury should not be the only thing that decides it.
I do think that there is a difference. Boyle decided not to fight or defend himself, and carkner. i think they're completely different things. I read in the paper today that they will not be appealing it.what would the appeal process be for a guy like you? How would you handle an appeal if they do and are you surprised that they didnt.
The appeal would go right above my head to the commissioner of hockey (Bettman). They'd compare it to the bittz clifford suspension.
I dont like what carkner did at all, but lets be honest. It's never something that you go into a game as a player or fan wanting to suspend somebody, but its certainly something. I live in new york and understand th epassion. It's never personal you try to do your best and remember your times as a player and try to make the best call possible, but it's in the CBA that the PA and us decided that an injury is a factor in the punishment
It'll suck if alfie plays
Well they told me that there is a possibility that he does. Their injury support doctor is on our NHL doctor's committee. When there's a head injury it's not done by the team trainer it's done by an MD. And i made my decision knowing that
How much do you take into account a player's previous history? It could be a concussion prone guy.
It's a good question, and it would play into it in the fact that well youre saying that you think the injury is all that decides it and i disagree because if it's a clean body check youre not getting a suspension. Whether its a guy prone to head injuries or not if it's a dirty play it can be called but if it's a clean injury it won't be.
In the hearing it's me, sather, glenn sather, hagelin, and hagelin's agent. I'm the only one defending the player who was injured.
So even though he apologized and such is there a consideration fora longer suspension and it was shorting because of hagelin's attitude?
There's a chance of it being alonger suspension, but it's
Again the premeditation is wehat really chops me cause it only got one game. I understand what youre saying but i respectfully disagree with you. You're gonna have a busy game today after that phili pittsburgh hearing.
Final quickies: if youre a player on the NYR how would you react to yourself for suspending hagelin for 3.
I was never happy its about the playoffs passion and supporting your team. I can only tell you that i'mt rying to do this job with the most that we can
Alf back for game 3 or game 4 would the rangers then have a chance to appeal or is there a window of time where they can't do it.
If they appeal itll have to be before the first game of the suspension (tonight)
Like i said i made this decision fully knowing that there's a possibility he will play tonight, but it could be longer.
They said he's feeling a little better, still has a headache but could still play.
I want it to be clear that ottawa was not dishonest about that. Like if alf is faking he'll lay down, go off a few minutes and come back for the power play or the next period.
If i were you i wouldnt go to the garden in the next few months
Whereever it is that you put that screw the new york rangers button in your desk, put it away for the next month!
not cleaned up really, but the gist of the shanahan interview on boomer
-different plays (Hagelin and Carkners)
-1 head injury
-no injury on the other
-thinks hagelin is a good kid
-Alfie has a concussion has to go off
-there was an injury
-shanny won't throw refs under bus (have to make that call in that moment, but not sure he would do it again) 3rd man in into an altercation (not necessarily a fight)
-injury is a contributing factor
-shanny: if alfie faking it he would have come back on for the powerplay
-bitz got 2 games for shoulder to head, felt elbow more deliberate thats why they gave hagelin 3 games
-degree of phillips hit on cally is not even remotely the same (they say it was shoulder hit to body not head)...he feels they are NOT the same
-webber/zetterburg incident...shanny not happy with that play (sounds like he wishes he had suspended webber, but did not say that)
-carton saying he has set the precedents for it cuz of the webber/zetterburg incident...carton going off on shanny that he changed the course of the series...
-appeal goes to bettman and is out of shanny's hands and could be less games (NOTE: RANGERS CLAIM THEY WILL NOT APPEAL IT)
-shanny does not like what carkner did
-how much do you take into account players previous injury? Shanny response: it iwll play into it if it is an illegal hit. IF there is a legal hit and there is an injury there won't be any suspensions/fines
Hagelin apologized and felt bad about it, hearing includes Hagelin, Sather, NHLPA, and Hagelin's agent.
Boomer respectively disagrees with Shanahan. If you were a teammate on the rangers how would you feel? Shanny: I'd be mad about a suspension especially in the playoffs and this tears him apart to hand out suspensions
Alfie back from game 3 or 4, could rangers appeal it then? The appeal has to be before the first game after the suspension.
Carton: where ever you keep that screw the rangers button in your office, can you put it away for the next 6 months!
LOL (great way to end it)
those are the notes i took during the interview...not a reporter so i dont feel like writing an article lol
