50 Contracts: 2012-13 Season

According to Cap Geek, The Oilers have presently committed to 31 contracts for next season. They will undoubtedly be qualifying at least 3 RFAs, Dubnyk, Petry and Gagner. I assume that Omark and Barker will not be under contract. They have to make decisions on RFAs Peckham, Plante, VandeVelde, Kytnar and Tremblay. Likely they will all be back. The UFAs that will likely be signed are Smyth and Petrell. Of the other UFAs, Hordichuk, Chorney and Danis will either be resigned or will need to be replaced on the list with other players. We will need a GK for OKC and Chorney's contract may go to a UFA if he is not signed. I count about 45 contracts prior to signing any of the unsigned draft picks. Davidson, Czerwonka and Pelss apparently will need to be signed or lost. Klefbom will need a contract either to have him play in NA or even to ensure we do not run into an Erixon or Schultz situation. Our top draft pick will need a contract and will likely not go back to Junior. That would make 50. I am probably missing someone. It looks like there will have to be some fancy juggling done this off season.

I thought Kytnar flew the coup? I can't see them resigning him.

off the top of my head guys leaving the organization that are either RFA or UFA

barker RFA--bu q-offer is 2.25mill---Both Sutton and Potter are signed for the 6-7 position
Omark---RFA and I offer to drive him to the airport of whereever he goes
Hordichuck and Smyth---Hords at a one year--but I think there is a problem siging Smyth--two years at 2.5 to 3 is my offer
Peckham on D is now expendable

On the farm

Plante--Traded for a mid round pick or no q-offer
Chorney---Time to move on
Yann Dennis, Josh Green, Bryan Rodney and Ryan Keller---only offered AHL contracts and not NHL
Milan Kaynter--I think he has already gone back to europe
Hunter Trembley---Numbers game

There will be some tough decisions--but some of those guys who count against the 50 are dead weight

Kytnar is not going to be signed. I'll bet my life on it.

Under Contract: 31.

RFAs signed: 3 (Dubnyk, Gagner, Petry) and maybe 3 (Plante, Omark, Tremblay).

UFAs: Maybe 2 (Smyth and Petrell) and maybe not 6 (Hordichuk, Chorney, Keller, Danis, Green, Rodney).

Prospects who need contracts: 4 (Blain, Davidson, Pelss, Czerwonka).

Definitely no reason to worry. We've got plenty of wiggle room.

yeah don't sign Smyth if he thinks he loves Edmonton and wants the most money, let him go play for Calgary.

I'm not worried. Competent management should be able to make the decisions needed to ensure we have room to sign the players we need. Wait... maybe I just made myself worried...

And the scapegoating of Smyth starts. There are plenty of other options to not sign if the Oilers are close to 50. many of those options are not close to making it to the NHL.

A 29th place team has a number of problems. 50 contracts isn't one of them.

Also, don't forget that "a player aged 18 or 19 signs an entry-level contract with a club (with his age calculated on Sept. 15 of the year he signed the contract) but does not play in at least 10 NHL games, the contract will "slide" or be extended one year. The extension does not apply if the player turns 20 between Sept. 16 and Dec. 31 in the year he signed the contract." Source: Capgeek

This is something I will let the Oilers worry about. They get paid well for this kind of stuff.

he definitely will get signed, a great defensive 3rd or 4th liner.
