PESCARA, Italy (AP) Hospital officials say Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini has died after suffering cardiac arrest during a Serie B match at Pescara. He was 25.
Edoardo De Blasio, a cardiologist at Pescara's Santo Spirito hospital in Italy, confirmed the death Saturday. He says ''unfortunately he was already dead when he arrived at hospital. He didn't regain consciousness.''
Morosini, who was on loan from Udinese, fell to the ground in the 31st minute of the match. A defibrillator was used on the player.
The match was called off and some players left the field in tears.
Saw video, really sad...this seems to be a recurring thing in the sport, Marc Vivien Foe, the hungarian player from Benfica, the Sevilla player, then just recently Muamba (who was literally dead, but was able to live), and now this guy.
Terrible, terrible news... i remember following this guy's early steps with Atalanta, was supposed to be a good prospect back then, and he was indeed a member of the U21 national team squad.
Serie B and serie A both suspended for this weekend.
I wonder why there have been so many deaths in the last 10 years on the football pitch, while I don't remember many in the 10 years before that. Especially if you think of the medical progress (see Muamba).

yeah very true...basically before 10 years ago I never heard of any death
Well, maybe this has to be said, it's possible that developments in sports science are causing this, in addition to the massive focus over the last few years on player fitness. I find it disturbing.
Lost his father, lost his older brother (affected by down syndrome), lost his mother, also has an older sister apparently seriously diseased. Now this.
Can't even think of his sister now.
Seriously.

holy crap that makes the Kennedy's seem lucky or blessed
The heart rates and stress some of these athletes are going through has only ramped up more as years have gone.
I don't think it's right to speculate, but I do not think the deaths are particularly linked. Yet, with all top level sports and the demands you start to wonder if there is not a medical answer either through things being taken or through different training that is going on. I am not aware of full scale testing programs in all leagues, but you wonder that there isn't something to it as well. I see these things and have to think of the Russian young hockey player and if some might be taking things they shouldn't.
On this case, props to Serie A. Though the report coming that a police car had to be broken into to allow the ambulance to escape is going to be a big deal
