I remember drawing up a Canadian Elite League system complete with promotion and demotion down to 3rd division. The top level was a national league which would have 12 teams in major cities across the country. The bottom team would be demoted to division 2, regional play which would be divided into Pacific (BC/Alberta), West (Manitoba/Saskatchewan+Territories), Central (Ontario/Quebec) and Atlantic (NB, NS, PEI, NL). These would be roughly 10-15 team circuits of cities where the bottom 2 clubs would be demoted to Division 3, provincial play consisting of all other centres able to field teams in the province. The champions to Division 3 provincial leagues would either move straight up or compete in a tournament to earn promotion to Division 2. Pacific would earn straight promotion, Atlantic would probably require a 3 team tournament for example. Champions of Division 2 regional leagues would compete in a tournament amongst other regional champions for the right to earn the 1 promotion berth available to the Canadian Elite Level.
It was a hybrid of European promotion systems and the Allan Cup. The high end would be less than NHL but higher than AHL calibre and the 3rd Division would be closer to AAA Senior, local guys who played minor pro/major junior/college hockey and former pros at the end of their careers.

ive made 5 to 6 "fantasy" hockey leagues all from A to AA to AAA I still run 4 of them! its kind of my favorite things to do! i wont go into team details but ive made a league called the APHL(single A) SHL(Rival to the SPHL)like the 90s league,SEHL(AA)and a IHL REDUX(AAA of course!!) just reply what league you wanna hear the teams ive made!

To be honest...I miss the IHL, too bad it went under because they had great cities for the franchises. (I wouldn't have even minded if they had gotten a New York Team).
Iceflyers rule, What does your AA league look like? I ran a league back in the 90's with a league simulator computer program I miss it. i start by doing research on the market sizes and arenas sizes and conditions...ive even went as far as to draw up some fake leases for fun!

last year there was an eastern and a western conference but i moved all the west coast teams into the IHL1

And the IHL had some revenue on TV...On "Home Improvement", one of the Taylor sons would be wearing a Detroit Vipers Shirt and on "The Drew Carey Show", Drew's friends would be wearing a Cleveland Lumberjacks Shirt.

I don't think any Atlanta based team would affiliate with Winnipeg. Also might as well have Gwinnett in your AAA league because there's probably a better shot at Gwinnett being upgraded to AAA than the city of Atlanta getting a AAA hockey club.

i know this gwinnett is in my aa league. and last year my atlanta team was affiliated with the thrashers. call it what you want but its just the way i did things plus gwinnetts higher affiliate would of course be the atlanta ihl team
IceFlyersRule, I have to look at your AA league and ask if the research was really done. A lot of those markets won't work at all. Not because they were burned before but because of other factors.

Gainesville - No where near the Gulf Coast, not sure arena has ice capabilities, and hockey would be third in line when selecting weekend dates
Mobile - last time someone tried to bring hockey there they asked for $10k a game in rent to scare them off
Birmingham - arena is either too big (BJCCC) or too small (Pelham) for AA hockey
New Orleans - where would they play? No arena in town that's in good enough shape or isn't too big for AA hockey. They could try New Orleans Arena again but it would be a cavern.
Montgomery - where would they play?
Tallahassee - Third in line for weekend dates again.
Savannah - the Savannah Hockey Classic only sells out because of the fans that travel from out of town to watch the schools that compete; not many locals attend.
Just to name a few.
Also, if you've gone to Ice Flyers games this season, you wouldn't know me but you've seen me most likely.
