Not to act as if I'm offended by this, I actually kind of enjoy being an underdog. But how come the Flyers never get any respect as far as how good they are in terms of. most people on the main board feel that, the Flyers will not make it past the next round due to shotty goaltending and defense. While its quite possible it may be true, it just feels like the same nonsense that was spewed out of all the "experts" mouths before the Pens series. We were hardly even givene a chance in the series by most and are on the verge of sweeping the supposed best team in the East, yet we have no chance of making it out of the next round even though we thoroughly handled the favorites out of the East? Should that not be a wake up call that we are a team to be reckoned with and even the supposed best couldn't take a game out of the series?
Like I said I'm perfectly happy always being the underdog in the series as it appears we will be in the next round as well, but it just strikes me as odd. Personally I think the Flyers are playing this run and gun system like they have been because they know the Pens can score they just know they can outscore them. I think they feel like they have to put up as many points as they can on the board because they know that they can come back. I think against a Boston or a New York we see a more disciplined, defensive game from everyone.
Well, one reason I can think of is this isn't typically the way you win playoff games. This wouldn't work well against boston or New York.
It's because fleury's a joke this postseason.
Bryzgalov's been bad too, but fleury's sv % is actually under .800 for this series.
17 goals allowed
84 shots against
about 161 minutes TOI
.798 sv%
6.34 GAA
Pretty hard to win any games with a stat line like that. And if I were the flyers coach why wouldn't I have them continue the run and gun style when the opposing goalie is giving up a goal every 5 shots?

the Flyers did handle MAF pretty well in the regular season as well. nothing as ridiculous as we saw in the last 5 periods from him in this series but they did fare well against him. In all honesty I will be shocked if this continues. I think the Flyers win this series probably on Wednesday. But I would look for a more "normal" score. 8 goals in back to back games.
Definitely going to have to figure out how to "reel it in" and get back to a more structured game. This style of play isnt good against teams like the Rangers and Bruins with goalies who can actually stop the puck.
We know the flyers can play more defensive type hockey though, see the 1-0 win against the caps. So, I think we are just playing a style to beat the pens...
It's all just gonna come down to if bryz can play better.

lot of those goal were nearly impossible to stop too.
but yea, way too many softies
Bury these ****ers. Alive. So many G-damn Pitt transplants down here. Steel City my ass.
I can have a beer with a Flyers fan. I can't with a Pens fan.
Steel city? The only industry they have out there anymore is greeters at the local Walmart and call centers. Oh yeah and Quaker State left that area long ago. At least in Philly we have tons of colleges and a strong Healthcare industry. Moreover, Pitt chicks are clingy....
On a side note, some Penguin fans would rather trade Malkin than Stall............................................. .................................................. .................................................. .........

Nooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!
A little bit more seriously, I don't think Martin's deserved all the bashing he's been given from the Pens fans. He's their Matt Carle in some ways. A little too soft, and good for at least one really bone-headed play per game. It's not like the rest of the Pens defense has been awesome.
The Flyers have recalled Tyler Brown, Matt Ford, Erik Gustafsson, Ben Holmstrom,Oliver Lauridsen, Michael Leighton, Brandon Manning, Tye McGinn & Harry Zolnierczyk

I agree and I think that is one of our strengths. Being able to change our system more than others depending on the team we're facing. I think Bryz knows this now and that's a big reason he hasn't lost his confidence.

I dunno, at this point fleury's confidence has to be at an all time low. A bad goal or two early on and I can see things snowballing into another snowman
I can't remember who, but someone posted on the Main Boards:
Quote:
I'm not sure Philly's strategy has been understood here - they're making a conscious choice to play not-defense, to get Pittsburgh rolling up and down the ice - because they believe they can out-gun them.
It's not that they can't play defence; it's that they're using (apparent) lack of defence to force a run and gun game.
I kind of agree, we've seen in the month of March that this Flyers team can tighten it up defensively...and if you notice that's the same month Bryz started playing better.
During that stretch we didn't score a lot of goals, but we played smart hockey and proved we could play that brand. I think it's pretty clear that against Pitts, Lavy probably wont change how we've been playing because...like it or not...we've been winning with this 'brand' of hockey.
But if we move on to Round 2, I think we'll definitely tighten it up.

I don't know if it's that calculated. We're a team with some systemic tendencies that are very aggressive. I think the Penguins are the same. When you put those two teams out on the ice against one another, this is what you get. Two teams who's style is inherently going to open up games.
It's interesting to consider the game plan. Certainly I don't think there's a scribble in Laviolette's handwriting on the locker room whiteboard saying: Give up first goal(s), storm back, win.
However, it's probably largely (my wild speculation) that, in finding themselves down by 3 in the first game and having to open the throttle, they saw that the Pitt D was wanting and that Fleury wasn't on his game. So a big part of the open style is probably a "because we can" approach.
And we noted widely that offensive depth and speed were big plusses with the current roster. Too bad that, in this offensive supernova, Couturier should be getting more love for his amazing job in rendering the league scoring leader an afterthought in this series. I'm not saying he hasn't been mentioned lots on here, but rather out in the "real" world.
