Woodley probably just doesn't follow hockey much. Has nothing to do with how bright he is or isn't.

To be fair, the A isn't exactly intuitive for non-hockey fans. C is pretty self explanatory, but A isn't. Football has multiple captains wear Cs and there don't appear to be assistant captains. How many other sports have assistant/other captains that wear a letter other C? I think it is one of those quirks that seem obvious for people who follow.

Well, people, mostly from Europe, think it's Assistant cause we call a player like that. For us European, non-english-native speakers, it's not Alternate, if it were, it's N on jersey
