Darcy speaks with John Vogl, says about other news outlets "tell them to call me"

John Vogl @BuffNewsVogl
Quote:
Finished long call with Darcy Regier (news coming soon) but any other news outlet looking to speak with him he said, "Tell them to call me."
Actual news story from Vogl's discussion with Regier coming soon, but I thought this tidbit was just reenforcement of the "Sully/Harrington are lazy" argument.

Edit:
Actual story from Vogl: http://blogs.buffalonews.com/sabres/...itiveness.html

I'm glad Vogl tweeted this.

I hope his colleagues are paying attention to their twitter feeds.

Tim Graham retweeted it and has also said something similar within the past few days.

I love it, to me the Three Stooges(Bucky, Harrington, Sullivan) come off as guys who have the attitude of "they should be calling us, we should not be calling them".

Gee, Vogl and Graham seem to have no issue with any of the Sabres.

TBN Sports writers make College writers look like professionals.

Not directly Sabres related, but to show the quality of the sports department at TBN, they just suspended Rodney McKissic for plagiarism.

Quote:
The Buffalo News ran another promotional story this morning with the headline “News draft coverage a top pick” that mentions its “deep roster” of sports reporters and columnists who will be involved in the coverage of the upcoming NFL Draft.
Rodney McKissic, who has been covering the Buffalo Bills, isn’t mentioned for a good reason.
According to multiple sources, McKissic has been suspended by The News for a month without pay because of plagiarism.

I wonder what the relationship is between the Sabres guys is at the News? It always seems like the Bills guys get along. Maybe Vogl doesn't exactly enjoy going to work each day and seeing his colleagues.

The actual quote was "Tell them to call me...so I can ignore the call and laugh as 'The Buffalo News' shows up on my caller ID."

That'll get you expelled from college, but not fired from TBN. Pathetic.

I wonder if Vogl is eating lunch alone today at the News' cafeteria?

Sully and Gleason always railed against Golisano for not returning their calls. I've never heard them complain of the same regarding Regier. I get the sense that they think they shouldn't have to call to get their story, that the story should just come to them. I find it ironic that Bucky boasts of all the hockey guys around the league that he talks to--and I doubt there are a lot of hockey guys thinking to themselves, "Hey, I should call Bucky Gleason today"--but does anyone think that he actually calls Regier? I doubt it. Same with Sully.

More and more, it sounds like the organization was not going to give guys like Harrington, Gleason, and Sullivan an opportunity to grandstand and pander to their base during a live presser. They'll give them answers in a private phone call, though. That puts the onus on those guys to make the call to get their story, or expose their true motives for why they wanted a live presser. I love it.

Vogl's usually above the editoral/commentary pieces and sticks to reporting without the spin.

And Tim Graham was a gem when he was the Sabres beat reporter.

Maybe Sullivan, Harrington and Gleason are afraid of getting choked with the force of Darth Regier over the phone?

Vogl has a blog post with audio up.

Update: Regier passed the question about no press conference to VP of Public and Community Relations Michael Gilbert at the end before it got cut off and said the decision was in part because of the relationship between the Sabres and WGR.

Any other news outlet.

Amazing how some of you can ignore that.

Geez, talk about having an agenda.

That part is not a direct quote, only "tell them to call me" is.

They're a private company. Of course they have an agenda.

As was shown today, they'll talk to people in the media who will ask them hard questions, but do to respectfully. They're just choosing not to make it easy on people in the media who exist only to piss and moan.

Frankly, I have no problem with that.

Interesting tidbit we can tear apart:

Quote:
"We have to compete harder," Regier said. "That’s a big statement, and it covers off individual play. It covers off the coaching staff. It covers off what I have to do as a general manager to help create that."
Hey Darcy, where was the on-ice help in the midst of that 12-game losing streak with half the roster on IR? It's not like waivers isn't an option... The tone gets set at the top. Clearly needing help and ignoring that need sets a tone for those below him that complacency is "good enough", at least from where I'm sitting.

On one of his Schopp/Bulldog spots later in the season (March-ish) he did admit that he regretted, in retrospect, not making a move during that time. FWIW.

I missed that. Granted, regret in life is very easy, especially in looking back at not doing anything.

Vogl: "We do have 14 other members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association, plus multiple TV stations in town. What went into the decision to NOT have a season ending news conference? Obviously the players had to answer to everyone who was around, but what went into the decision to not have a season ending gathering?"

Regier: "I would leave that with Mike Gilbert. For you to ask and talk to Mike Gilbert about it. It's probably the place for you to start, John."

Vogl: "Did you not have any input and whether or not there would be one?"

Regier: "We talked about what we would do. We have certain broadcast affiliations that we wanted to acknowledge. We'll be on WGR from 5 to 6 today and that's one of the outlets. That was part of the plan and I was fine with that."

The audio cuts out after that, so it's hard to know what the context of the "tell them to call me" quote is.
