There's been threads here before about players who scored on their first NHL shift (i.e. Lemieux, Mogilny), but how many players have scored on their last shift?
The only one I'm sure about is Bill Barilko. Scored in OT to win the Cup in 1951, then died that summer.
I thought Pierre Mondou might qualify, as he scored on the play where Samuelsson caught him in the eye with his stick, but it turns out that he did try to return to the lineup for a few playoff games later that season before deciding to retire.
Lemieux also got an assist on his first shift and scored in his first game back from retirement in 2000. Sweet little snap one-timer from Jagr past ... Curtis Joseph?
So few players "still have it" when they retire that a pre-mature off season death seems helpful. Tim Horton manage to score in his last game?
Edit: I forget who said it but I heard the quote about Mario's comeback, "they could write a novel but nobody would buy it because it's just not believable."
Sundin scored in the 3rd period of his last game (IIRC it put the Canucks up 5-4 in a game they would lose 7-5), although I'm pretty sure he had a few more shifts after that.
