You are literally just arguing semantics, you know what right
It's not semantics, if the league waits until 10 games after the incident for a ruling, the automatic suspension lasts 10 games. However, they almost always rule before even 1 game has elapsed, as they did in this case. The ONLY thing automatic is that the league has to rule, and until then, the player sits. The league ruled here before 1 game. The automatic suspension was 0 games. The supplementary discipline (not automatic) was 1 game. It could have been 20 just as easily.

then why are Bruins obsessively listing the various dirty plays by Caps, complete with embedded YouTube videos, and then challenging Caps fans to find a single link showing a dirty play by a Bruin?
we are whining that Backstrom shouldn't have been suspended.
you are whining that we've been playing dirty the whole series, and you have the video clips to prove it.
Nope. Again, I'm sick of the childish pouting by Caps fans about the Bruins dirty play.
I got fed up with people calling the Bruins dirty goons when we've been taking crap all series long. I'm fed up with it, and I want proof, not whining. Show me what we've done that you're all up in arms about.
He's wrong. You don't need a source, it's there in the rule book in black and white.
It's the way the league judges it (as I'm told from a reliable source). If it's a match penalty, they have to look for a reason not to suspend you. If it's not, they have to look for a reason to suspend.
And that makes sense logically as well.
Crosscheck to the face just doesn't leave a lot of room for interpretation.

hold on.
first, you say that Bruins are strong, tough hockey players and their fans have no problem with rough stuff. then you say, "we've been taking crap all series long." which is it? are you rough tough team, or have you been taking crap all series long?
second, the childish pouting by Caps fans was over Backstrom getting suspended.
that is why i myself am not hurrying out to find the video links you keep requesting ad nauseam. because i am not trying to prove the Bruins are dirty. i know you are having a hard time understanding that. i was trying to prove that Backstrom's play, in the grand scheme of things, wasn't a big deal.

I don't disagree that they should have a valid reason to not suspend, but there is nowhere in the rule book that says it's automatic for any amount of games.

We have been taking crap. Cross checks to the face every damn game. We play through it. It's the playoffs.
I'm not picking on you troyer, and apologize if it seems so. You're a solid and rational poster. I'm reading this:
"Bruins allowed to get away with anything but caps do one thing and it's an outrage."
So it's 4-2 for the caps in the dirty departement.
happy now ?
I'd be fine if people would admit that by and large, the Bruins are playing a pretty clean series, and the Caps have had some lapses in judgement.
Just stop the whining about how dirty we are. It's wrong and stupid.

you need to relax. we already showed you the Tim Thomas punch and the Lucic punch on Hendricks. They show a clip in between periods HNIC where they follow Marchand around for a few shifts and pointed out all the dirty things he was doing. They were subtle so the refs will miss it but they were all behind the play and dirty with bad intent. He did the stick between the legs to a cap player and "accidently" high sticks another. In the scrums he would put his stick up so players who get hit by his stick. He's a rat boy alright.
I AM SAYING BACKSTROM'S CROSS-CHECK WASN'T THE END-OF-THE-WORLD.
It wasn't. Really wasn't. He didn't just tap him, either, tho. Begs the question, should crosschecks to the head be tolerated? I'm a fan of a team that's gone through a zillion concussions, so I'm all for strict rules that protect the head.
Backstrom just got overheated. He wasn't trying to kill anybody.
cneely: The Bruins are DIRTY. Get over it. The Caps are too but the Bruins are D.I.R.T.Y. You have ****ing Rat Boy, Lucic, and Ference and Thourton. These are all players who have been suspended and fined multiple times. **** now you Jack Edwards wannabie.

Dirty to me is cross checking a player in the face.
Dirty to me is spearing a player in the balls.
The Bruins have done none of that this series. The Caps have. Multiple times.

I don't think the Caps have been bad at all. This has been a pretty clean series compared to some others.... What Backstrom did was indeed suspendible. Sucks he did it and im just happy Peverley didn't try and embellish it and make it look worse than it was.
The thing that bugs me is people complaining about the scrums. Come on, are we not hockey fans? It has and will always be part of the game. I'm sorry but facewashing a guy is not targeting the head. Backstrom knows full well what he gets himself into when he enters a scrum and I'm sure he's not complaining about it like some fans here.
This is a great series albeit frustrating at times for both sides I'm sure.
Also Marchand has done the same move to a couple of players already in the first two games so that was Karma. Does Marchand not wear a cup like the Cap players do?
Right, but they have to find reason why he shouldn't sit for a game after a match penalty. It's the opposite if they review a minor penalty or a play that wasn't called at all. With a crosscheck to the face, Shanny's hands are tied. Not the worst thing in the world, but if the ref calls a match, the player's gonna have to sit one.
By your logic, they are making a decision whether or not to keep him suspended forever. One game doesn't appear anywhere in the rule book. Technically, he is already suspended forever at the hearing. Shanahan commutes the sentence to whatever he thinks appropriate.
