Any word on Hossa's health? I know he was released from the hospital, but are the rumors of a broken jaw true? Even without any possible jaw injury, that looked like a concussion.
So that very explosive upwards motion, from his feet all the way up to his shoulders, you do not consider to be "jumping into the hit?"
He literally launches himself up as he's making the hit.
When you do something "into" something it usually refers to an action occurring before another action. Like if i do a backflip into the pool I jump off of something do a back flip and then enter the water.
Torres did not jump into the hit. There is no debate that his feet came off the ground due to him exploding through the hit as opposed to because of the force of the hit, but he did not jump into the hit, i think that much is clear.
That's ok, I respect Bob's opinion a lot but I just don't see the reasoning as to how you can call this a hit to the head. The head may have been the principle point of contact, but torres made a full body check which is explained in this video as being a legal hit. http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/con...d=60&id=123678

No I am not saying this at all. I think that there is no room in the game for a hit like this. All I am saying is that by the rules there isn't much wrong with it. Its not an illegal hit to the head, its very close to being interference, and it is very borderline to charging.
I think he will be suspended, probably 2-4 games. His past won't help him.
Torres will have an in person hearing on Friday with the help of the NHLPA.

Phoenix Coyotes forward Raffi Torres has been suspended indefinitely, pending an in-person hearing Friday, April 20, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today. The hearing, which had been planned for today, was deferred at the request of the player and the National Hockey League Players' Association.
It's probably been said somewhere in this thread, but I'm not reading back over all the posts: That seemed like the kind of hit people used to orgasm over when Scott Stevens did it.
They've already done it though. How can you say the Avery rule is a more important issue than something like player safety?
the avery rule was not a rule change, it was merely a clarification. It was considered to be unsportsmen like conduct. No rule was changed or amended to make that "change".

I'm not arguing semantics with you. Torres' body clearly pushes up and into the hit, which results in the force and his shoulder coming up. If he braces himself for a good and solid check, he would have lowered his shoulder. He didn't...instead he propels himself in an upward motion.
Torres might try to downplay this hit, but considering his history with dirty hits, he is on very thin ice. If they don't make an example out of him he will just keep doing these hits in the future. It took a proper suspension and talking to by his team to get Cooke to clean up his act. Maybe the same is what is needed with Torres. Question is will the organization also support any suspension that Torres gets.
How are people defending this hit not considered Trolls? This is the clearest case in these playoffs of a suspendable hit next to Weber. That being said, Torres only gets 4-5 games.
Well they are trolls. As soon as the NHL's ruling goes against all of their arguments they'll simply fade into the mist.

According to NHL, hearing would have been today but Torres and NHL Players' Association requested it be delayed until Friday.

Can the Coyotes get their draft pick taken away or at least a massive fine in the 100K dollar range for keeping Torres? The guy is going to end up wrecking someone's career and it doesn't seem like the Coyotes care.
given that he's suspended indefinitely pending his hearing friday, i'd say that thought is right out the window
why wouldn't they be?
My guess is that Torres knows that the league will try to make an example of him and wants representation. Smart move and completely within his rights.
At some point, the standard will be set, and this hit could be the one to raise that bar.
I've heard this throughout the year. Every time 'this is the hit that will raise the bar'. And guess what? Nothing happens. 1 game here. 3 games there. No games. 2 games here... it's an ongoing inconsistency.
