Milan Michalek and 2nd round pick. for Orpik and Pittsburgh 1st and 3rd
There you go. Crosby gets his winger. I'd do that in a heartbeat if I was Pens. Then I'd ship off Martin and use that money on a better d-man. Pens got some good D prospects (Depres, Harrington etc) coming up so it'd be worth it IMO.
He would fit in perfectly on the Isles. He's everything they need on defense, on top of that he's a vet signed for another 2 years at a reasonable salary. If wingers are what you are looking for I would try to go the prospect route, one of the Russians(Petrov or Kabanov) plus another prospect/pick. If it had to be a roster player I think Grabner would be the only player with value that the Isles would consider moving.
I know a lot of Isles fans want to see how he bounces back next season, as do I quite frankly, but if it came down to it I'd part with him to get Orpik back. It would save us the time and heartbreak of being shot down by numerous UFAs this offseason. We also have a pretty solid list of replacement candidates for Grabner as well.
Can he play RD? If so he would be perfect with Markov. What would you be looking for? If you don't want to take on any salary I would do Kristo + 2nd (33rd).

I really don't have a good read on Orpik's value in the eyes of other GMs. I think his reputation is actually better amongst non-Pens fans than with Pens fans at this point. Haven't quite figured out if Pens fans are being too harsh, or other fans are relying on old memories. He hasn't been good this series, but he's certainly not been as bad as Martin or Letang.

Letang has absolutely, 100% been better than Orpik. Orpik has been losing guys in coverage and chasing hits out of position like he gets paid for it. Letang's been better at both ends of the rink, and by a fair margin.

I suspect his decline in play is related to the hernia/groin issues he has been fighting for two years now.
Looks like he will have a long offseason to rest it; and he will most likely be back to himself next season, which is why I seriously doubt Shero moves him.
When Morrow and Despres are ready to eat big minutes, I could see him being moved then. Maybe next summer.

it's not that Brooks had a bad year, but in the playoffs he was invisible.

Despres looks ready to eat more minutes and to me, has replaced Martin already. Michalek, not really a big fan of but he had a really up and down season as well, doubt Shero moves both in one summer though.
In any case, I see Orpik as being a guy that takes a lesser cap hit to just retire a Penguin and slowly become a solid guy to have on the 2nd pair or 3rd pairing, etc.
I guess I just never want to see Orpik play for another NHL team.
Don't really see a fit with Tampa. Malone is an obvious candidate to be traded for one of the Pens expensive, expendable veteran D-Men, but Orpik has a lower cap hit, the Pens aren't looking to add salary when/if they move one of those D-Men and Malone isn't a big need in Pittsburgh.
What would Tampa be willing to part with other than Malone?
If Orpik is dealt, I'd want a physical guy coming back in return. The only additional request would be that, unlike Orpik, this physical guy doesn't constantly put himself out of position by going for hits he doesn't need to make.
An Orpik who plays a physical, but not out of control game is an asset. The Orpik we currently see, who goes for neutral zone hits when the puck is already deep in the Pens zone, or who goes chasing all the way out to the blueline when the other team is cycling the puck, thus leaving his position wide open in front of the net, is a liability.
I'd argue the Pens could use someone who can battle in front of the goal and knock in some rebounds. Kunitz especially isn't cutting it on the PP. I'd take Malone back. Ideally we'd get someone younger.

Malone would help, but he's not what a cap strapped team like ours needs for 4.5 million of cap space.
It's just tough finding the right fit with Tampa. Seems they would do a Malone/Orpik swap, but not a Malone/Martin swap. The Pens are the opposite. I think they might do the Malone/Martin deal, but would pass on the Malone/Orpik deal.
I don't think Orpik's moved at all. I think Martin is traded, and Niskanen is either re-signed or his rights will be traded and we sign a UFA. But I see Orpik staying.

While I agree that the Pens could use a net front presence, I believe that losing Orpik's physicality (as erratic as it made him at times) will also be a huge hole in the lineup, especially given the defensemen we have remaining. Only Engelland would be considered a "bruiser", so without a physical replacement for Orpik, we'd have a really easy (physically speaking) defense to play against.
