Above Grigorenko for sure. Yakupov I'd say it would be pretty close to 50/50 depending on the scout you talked to, but give the age factor it may swing slightly in MacKinnons favour. I'd say his ceiling is a lot higher then Yakupov, but I'll admit I've seen Yakupov only on a few occasions and I've watched MacKinnon for a while now.

A lot of scouts said they'd take him over Nail, and certainly over Grig. I would lol.

I wonder who'll get him... Habs Tank again?

In my dreams.

I'd say the top 3 candidates for MacKinnon will be Columbus, Calgary and New York (isle)

IMO over grigorenko for sure, especially after the recent series. Yakupov is close, Bob MacKenzie recently said some scouts would take Mackinnon, but that means some would take Yakupov.

Penguins should trade Crosby and replace him with MacKinnon. No more concussion problems

It really sucks that there has to be a cap.

With a cap there is no chance what so ever of a possible Dynasty.

I think people are discounting Sean Monahan and Seth Jones a little too much. 1 thing scouts seem to ignore is defensive play and defensive instincts.

It is understandable when talking about 16 year olds, and personally I believe defensive play is only a factor if talent level is considered equal because that can always be worked on. Talent always comes first, and MacKinnon has tons of it.

No it is not, people say you can teach defense. Well there aren't too many poor defensive players coming out of JR that become elite defensive players at the next level. I want a forward who can play in high leverage situations, play against the opponents top lines and still put up points. Players like Monahan projects to do that.

MacKinnon, in my live viewings, was terrible defensively, gave the puck up ala Kovalchuk and failed to play a simple game. I know he is 16 and will improve with age but players don't flick on a switch to this sort of stuff. Not only is there offensive hockey sense but there is neutral zone hockey sense and defensive zone hockey sense...all these things are instincts that I feel won't change much. It's why talented players like Jeff Friesen hit a plateau.

The only way Calgary is a lotto pick next year is if Kipper is traded or has a long term injury. And if Edmonton is picking first overall again next year.. their young guns aren't all everyone thinks they are.

It's important to remember that Monahan is almost a year older and has had an extra year of chl experience. If mackinnon fails to improve next year you may have a point but considering his age he's had a spectacular rookie campaign. The game breaking, rise to the occasion type performances he's had are IMO the most important thing you can see in a prospect coupled with unmatched physical skills.

If Edmonton gets the #1 pick, they have to take Jones.

Curious what the state of the game was like? Were they losing? because I saw game 3 vs Quebec live and it was BRUTAL. Tried to do farrrrrrrrrrrr too much and at one point just went end to end again and again only to try the same inside out move and get shutdown. Didn't use his wingers at all + looked completely frustrated. Where have you and I seen THAT before? lol

Still, I consider that to be more of an effect of the team losing an important game and him wanting or thinking he had to go it alone. I've also seen some excellent games out of him where he just can't seem to do wrong.
