The Vikings finally seem to be closing in on their long-awaited new stadium. And it won’t be built in Southern California.

A.J. Monsour of KFAN reports that the Minnesota Legislature could pass a stadium bill as soon as Thursday. A press conference has been scheduled for 9:00 a.m. CT.

If the deal is finalized, a new stadium will be built close to the site of the Metrodome, with the Vikings playing in the existing structure for two or three years while construction proceeds. Then, the Vikings will spend one full season at the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium before moving into the new venue, which would open in 2016.

Well, for what it's worth, Cowboys Stadium's official building work began Nov. 1, 2005, with the demolition of houses and such in the area. It was not opened until May 27, 2009. That is 3 1/2 years.

If you applied the same 3 1/2-year window to Minnesota, and say that it is May 1, 2012, that the construction process begins by demolishing and moving dirt to prepare the space, you are looking at November 2015. Add in the fact that you have to demolish the old Metrodome if it is needed for space to complete the new stadium, and the fact winter weather may have an impact at some point, and that adds on time. So 2016 sounds about right.

That's assuming this all passes of course with the Capitol and the city. I read an article where supposedly 7 of the 13 city councillors would vote against approving the city's share of the stadium (approx. $150 million plus $180 million in operating costs over 30 years) unless it went to a public vote.

Maybe the Vikings should hire little Logan from Phoenix to stand before the Minny' councillors and say, "Mr. and Ms. councillor. Please don't take my football team away." (insert puppy-dog eyes here)

I don't know if there's a direct comparison to other siutations but I saw upclose the stadium complex in Cincinnati. After the Bengals moved to a football-only facility, Riverfront/Cinergy was temporarily renovated while the new/current ballpark was constructed. From that aspect, it was interesting. Here's a video of the demolition which shows the proximity of the structures:

Oddly enough, Cincinnati and what they did was the first thing I thought of when I saw the blueprint. Pretty cool if you think about it; even to the point of I remember a couple homers making it from Riverfront to Cinergy.

Stupid politicians shot down the stadium bill 9-6.

Maybe in LA our new mascot could be Hologram Tupac.

All that means is that the Goofers football team is more important than the Vikes.

And the Wild, the Twins, other colleges in MN. It'll be weird after awhile without football in Minny, but the legislature only wants to spend money on some entities, and not others.

One thing though, more and more Americans are now changing their tune and are now against any public funding for any stadium/arena. The voters shot down the new Islanders arena proposal as an example.

Well looks like those who were shouted down and scoffed at for saying that deal would never fly were correct

Gonna be strange when the NFC North is Packers , Bears , Lions and Rams someday

Shooting down the islanders arena was dumb, it would have helped Nassau. Losing the Vikings is dumb as well.

This comes out the day they release the schedule, so that the Vikings are essentially locked in. Unless, I'm just being too simplistic.

Well played, politicians. Well played.

Wasn't the deadline to file for relocation in February? I thought they were locked in once that passed.

This is such a joke. The Vikings should just stop playing these games and waiting for them to make a decision. Make some threats and start talking to other cities. Do something. They didn't want to piss anyone off so they tried to do everything the right way but obviously that hasn't worked.

Vikes VP Bagley on talk stadium may have to wait til next year: "There is no next year. We still have time to get this done this session"

Vikes VP Bagley: "We have no plans to come back here next year...no action is a decision by the state of Minnesota. Need to get this done"

Bagley: Vikes focused on this session & not thinking about what happens if deal isn't done. When pressed to elaborate, won't say more.

Vikes should move on ,, They want a handout and Minnesota cant afford one right now (Nor is population in support of one)

Move on ,, And eventually Minnesota will go the route of Houston and get another team when economic environment is much improved

Honestly a real shame.

Well, if they move to LA, they better change the name. Bad enough that they have one former Minnesota team with an irrelevant nickname to the LA area.

^ Jags are stuck in a lease til 2027.

It's Vikes, Rams or Chargers. But the Vikes are the only ones who are free agents at the moment.
