Looks like Luongo will be staying...

Sun-Sentinel Article

"It's a positive for the organization that I'm going to take into consideration," Luongo said. "Not only the fact they were able to get Olli signed, but there was not a fire sale this year. Those are two huge factors.

"[Thursday] showed a lot what are the intentions of the team. The only thing left to be seen is whom we sign in free agency this summer. If everything goes well, I'm sure I'll be signing long term in the future also."

That is all Luongo was looking for from the organization, a commitment and a plan. We the fans have been waiting for this for years, tired of the constant trading of quality players for draft picks. And now, this organization finally made the financial commitment to the team. Florida will be an aggressive team in the offseason, and are going to be ready to go next season.

That's part of what hurt the Panthers in the past. They always tried to bring in stop gaps just to try and get into the playoffs, and never worked out. Look how bad they were after the first few times they were in the playoffs.

Florida may sign a couple of support players, but if you think the Panthers are suddenly going to sign a Wade Redden or Chara, forget it.

Luongo and Jokkinen will require a financial commitment of probably around $11.5-12 million per year when it is all said and done (figuring Luongo will probably sign for $6-$6.5 million per year).

Cohen has operated under a self-imposed budget of around $28 million, that suddenly is not going to change. The Panthers are still losing money as a franchise.

Nevertheless, the positive thing for Luongo has to be that a committment was made to Jokkinen, and they do have some nice young players in pocket (i.e. Horton, Bouwmeester, Stewart).

But don't get carried away into thinking the Panthers are going to be big ticket spenders in the off season.

From my understanding, this is going to be the first season since Alan Cohen took ownership of the group, that they will be out of the red financially. The team is actually going to make money this season. And you will be proven wrong in the offseason, this team will be aggressive in the free agent market. There budget for next season will be around $38 million, and even with Luongo and Olli signing long term, they will have money to add a quality blue liner, as well as whatever else they need.

From the Palm Beach Post's account of the Jokinen Press Conference:

"Keenan said ownership has determined that the team's 2006-07 budget will rise by about $10 million, to about $38 million, giving him enough leverage to both sign Luongo and pursue more free agents, starting with a high-end defenseman."

10M$ raise they say.. 3M$+ was just used to resign Gratton and Jokinen. Another 3M$ will be needed to sign Luongo long term. That leaves us with around 2M$ to add players next season.. Sure couple players will be gone too but that opens new holes. Were looking at around 3-4M$ max to use on UFA market. Woohoo!
