http://www.rds.ca/hockey/chroniques/199932.html

Engrish translation: ( using free online translator )

Friday March 10 2006 - (RDS.ca) - according to the New York Newsday, the Islanders could repurchase the remainder of the contract of the attack Alexei Yashin.

Yashin must touch 35,3 million during the five next years. According to the terms of the collective convention, if the Islanders repurchase the contract, they will have to pour an amount of 23,5 million to the former player of the ottawa Senators, sum remboursable on a period of ten years.

Yashin has 18 goals and 33 pass this season. To this rhythm, it will finish the season with a total of 68 points, the second one more total bottom of his career at the time of a season completes.

Mods might want to lock this one down, since it is a non-story.

Newsday reported that buying out Yashin MIGHT BE an option for the Isles but that no decision had been made. Newsday did not give any indication whatsoever that a buyout was at all likely to happen. So, RDS is basically distorting Alan Hahn's (Isles beat reporter) comments. A Yashin buyout is no more likely today than it was yesterday.

this also made rounds on rotowire....all based on Hahn's speculation in Newsday. We should traded Hahn for a 5th round pick, and washed our hands of him

If they wanted to buy him out they would have done it during the grace period before Free Agency began.

What team is going to have 4-5 million a year of their cap wasted for 10 years?

Actually, it would be a 2 million a year. The buyout is 2/3 the original contract X paid over 2 times the length of the contract.

And if/when it happens this summer, I'll buy drinks for everyone on the board!

Were I an Isles fan, the dashed hopes inspired by that thread title would tick me off something fierce.

You know, Drake, Yashin would make a fine center for AO.

My mistake, I suppose they could do it I just don't know why now and not months ago when it wouldn't have counted against the cap.

Heh.

Were he bought out and available, I think the odds are not half bad that McPhee might tender an offer... though trepidation with regard to Yashin and attitude would probably nag at the back of one's mind, I suppose.

Biggest obstacle is likely salary. The Caps haven't really indicated where they expect payroll to rest next season. Either way, the current contract's a killer.

I'll trade you the Alexi Yashin for the NHL rights to Rod Langway. Deal?

Would you take Biron?

Rod's a pretty fair coach. Not sure what he's been up to since leaving the Richmond Renegades bench...

Strangely, I think the guy the team is hoping can fit as a decent center is ... Kris Beech. It seems that he's going to stick the rest of the year and get his last, best shot at the NHL. Talent's certainly there. Shrug.
