Marc Staal Getting Back To Form (Staal Appreciation Thread)

Staalsy has really stepped it up and played well for the most part. Great to see him working his way back to his top shutdown defenseman form.

Although we should trade him in the offseason anyway

Very noticeable in that last game (in a good way!).

Yes, I think he is on his way back to form with his play, and I also saw a leadership element re-emerging as well. He was jumping into the play, trying generate some offense too.

Next game will be a big one for him.

Agreed. He was paired with Girardi in the third period, right? He seems to be getting back on track. I still say he scores a big goal sometime in this series.

Dude has been our best defenseman in all zones, bar none (although Girardi gets major props for his work against Spezza).

He's been great, just needed time before he started showing a lot of his older self.

I liked the Scott Stevens-esque hit on Spezza the other game.

I like how the one positive thread on our board has barely any responses, but every call out thread gets a ton.

If the series was still at 2-2, but we lost Game 3 and won Game 4, it would be the opposite.

So good to see him playing better. He's hitting more, skating the puck up more...

Well he layed someone out the other night...the guy ran into him and he didnt even budge...Strong kid,but hes looking better of late.

Still not a huge fan of him,but a healthy and confident Staal would be a big thing.

OMG, this place is like Homerville. Staal has been passed on the depth chart by McDonagh, Girardi, and Del Zotto. Staal's been on the ice for 7 of Ottawa's 8 goals. Stick checks with a long stick do not make you a top defenseman, especially in front of your own goal. Zero offensive skill too. Should have offered him with Dubinsky for Nash.

You mean the same place that recently had two different threads bad-mouthing the best goalie in the world?

Yeah. Homerville.

Quit looking at box scores and watch the games and you'd see that Staal has been the best defenseman on the ice.

I think he is back to his form. Looks comfortable in all parts of his game. It's like he has never skipped a beat.

Yet he's still better than any blue liner on Islanders.

Being that you are one of the biggest homers here, I find it funny you laugh.

He's horrible on covering the front of the net and clearing the crease. When he has the puck, charge him. He'll fumble it in his skates. If he gets it out in that situation, it's a wreckless flip up the boards. If you're skating towards him in the Rangers zone, he's going to skate backwards and then about the faceoff dot he's going to reach his stick out, so cut towards the middle at the top of the circle and he's stuck because he's committed himself already. He has zero offensive skills. Should have buried his chance at the end of the power play. Instead, Ottawa breaks down ice to score.

On ice for both Ottawa goals in game one, 2 of 3 in game two, and all 3 in game three.

guys be nice to the Islander fan. around this time each year he gets really bored from not being able to watch any hockey he needs to come to other teams threads and talk ****. he would go to the Islanders section but the other fan is on vacation so he'd be talking to himself.

welcome Islander fan.

Another Rocket Scientist at HF. Tell me RS, in your opinion, how is Stall a top 4 defenseman?

In Ottawa Sens kept Spezza on the ice against Staal pairing. Torts didn't quick-change in either game, even late, to reaffirm the Girardi -vs- Spezza matchup.

As for the person saying Staal was on the ice for a bunch of goals. He's not the goalie genius. The only goal he was the guy burnt on was the one that went through his legs when he slid to block it. He was in position, making the right play, and it went through… it happens.

I'd link NHL.com's goal replays, find one other that was Staal's man coming free, a shot that Staal should've blocked, a blown coverage, or even caused by Staal turning the puck over or losing the battle along the boards.

Boxscores are fun though right? I hope you're enjoying your first NHL season, but this isn't MLB… stats don't mean nearly as much.

I expected him to need some time to get his conditioning back after missing so much of the season, so I wasn't surprised when he started off slow.

He looks much better now but I'm expecting much more from him next season after an offseason and some training camp.

Nah man, the reason I made this thread is because Staal has been elevating his play. I do not even get to hear Sam and Joe for the record (living in FL atm)
