Is it just me or did Leino sound a lot like a selfish player?

I... I... I...

With a dash of "we"

Sorta diva-ish......

He wasn't fond of position switches, yet he's the one who asked for the switch. He wants more ice time, even though he's not producing in the time that he is given.

Yeah, based on these comments, I feel like I'm writing him off. Big mistake to sign him unless he turns it around.

Is it just me, or did Ville sound a lot like WTF is he talking about - I don't understand you?

At least he's candid. If he sucks next season... Kill me.

This, definitely.

As much as people have ragged on Leino, I never got the impression that his struggles were due to lack of effort or skill. He was fighting to find chemistry for a long time, and it just never really clicked. He started to pick his game up quite a bit towards the midway point, but sure enough, he went out for a few games due to injury and was bounced to a different line and found himself in the same rut again until the last few weeks of the season.

I'm pretty confident he rebounds next year to the tune of 45-50 points

A lot of the interview was about his and the team's struggles over the course of the year . I don't get a selfish vibe from this at all

It's a post-season one-on-one -interview, not like he's supposed to answer team questions the same way as during the season. Stafford's interview used the same format, except Ville was more direct in his opinions and Vogl was making a meal of it (emphasis mine):

I mean, if you pad the quotes with your own "insights" like this you can make him sound like a pretty ****** person. Can't understand why Vogl would go gonzo, it's usually Bucky's style to imply things that aren't there.

Get used to it.

Overall though, I'm glad that ultimately he looked in the mirror and realized it was his own problems.

I can't find the thread or any old articles, but I remember pointing out at the time that Leino didn't exactly ask for or demand the switch. I believe he told Lindy he'd like to play on the wing or would prefer it. A slight but pretty important difference.

This is pretty much what I expected. It's the stuff he's been saying all year - no real surprises.

I'm in the minority when I say I thought he played well for us most of the time this season. Statistically, he wasn't there, but his skillset was an asset to the team in terms of the possession game.

I expect a boost in numbers next year. He started to gel in the second half of the season.

What exactly is the importance of it? Beeshack's point still stands. He said he didn't like the position switches but let it be know he would play another position. Whether he demanded it, asked for it or just put it out there. It's odd to then complain about something you said you would do.

To top it off he says he had no problem with the switch later in the year because he felt more comfortable with his game at the time.

I mean, it's only right in the article.

Quote:
An inability or unwillingness to adapt to a new position hindered Leino's season from the outset. The 28-year-old played wing for Detroit and Philadelphia, but the Sabres needed a center. Leino said he'd played in the middle while developing in Finland, and both he and the Sabres seemed excited about the prospect of moving back to center.

That excitement disappeared quickly. Leino asked out of the middle in the opening weeks, and the request was granted by the end of October.

From almost every NHLer that is struggling offensively. Usually followed by something along the lines of; I need to simplify things and just keep working hard.

It's been wrongly reported that way since October. Leino demanding a move to the wing has entered into the realm of Urban Legend.

Demanding is a stronger form of asking. I don't think Leino did either. I think he "put it out there." The difference, when evaluating the character of a player, is huge.

And all three are different ways of trying to get the same thing. You can play this semantic game all day if you like. But the reality is Leino complaining about position switches rings hollow. When it's pretty clear he as open to it early in the year and had no issues with it late in the year.

On Oct. 24, after practice, Ruff said, "Ville mentioned that he'd like to go to the wing."

That has been twisted into Leino going to Ruff and demanding to be moved to wing. It's unfair to Leino (but I still think he's a turd).

But, in message board and media lore, it is now cast in stone: Leino demanded the move.

And so it shall be.

Several things. At the time Leino asked out of the center position, it was to stop being the fourth line pivot and move back into the top six. He also never played a game at center with top six linemates unless you count the shift he took with Vanek and Pominville against the Flyers.

Leino really appears to be someone who marches to the beat of his own drum, almost artistic about the game and his place in it. The amount of talk about how he feels and the blame of how he felt on how he performed reminds me a great deal of some airy, art-y people I've known over the years.
