one current roster player than deserves a raise

besides huet which we all know will be getting a drastic raise shortly from his 456,000 dollar salary ....

steve begin has to be the guy i feel for . he is all heart and soul most nights mr hustle, mr crash and bang ,mr penealty killer
mr shot blocker (last night again with 11 second his forchecking forced the turn over to seal the win )

the club has a option on him next season for only 646,000 dollars
its a time like this where id love to see the montreal canadiens break the contract and give him a raise say to 750,000 - 800,000 even tho he deserves more , just as a token justure to say we appreicate your hard work and sacfrice's

i know he signed the contract with that " club " option for the 3rd year in it but man this guy deserves way more than 646,000 a year for what he has and done for this club night in and out .

i know he will get a big raise (over 1 million a year) when he signs his next contract but it sure would be a classy move on the canadiens part to show a little appreication towards steve b ...

i really hope this is one guy who will retires in a habs jersey . im so glad he is a montreal canadien .

"Need" is a big word, anything over 3 letters is. But seriously I'm sure you don't mean he need more money to make ends meet.
Begin will get his share of the piein due time. I'm sure he would appreciate but at the same time if he spends his career in Montreal and retires a millionaire he won't be complaining about not getting 100k more.

Career Habs for sure.

Does he deserve more than 646? Yes, but unfortunately no hockey club is going to give away $ they don't have to.

Markov.

Signing him for two years was a great move.

If he keeps up this level of play next season, he'll be due for a big, big raise in the summer of '07.

I don't know Vandermeer's contract but I assume it was negotiated at 450 correct me if I am wrong...not the same thing as giving a player more money when they don't have to as per the contract. Even if it is a small amount, cap space is important nowadays.

The thing that sucks about Vandermeer's contract is that it's one-way. However as long he's in the minors at least it doesn't count against the cap. the search for a resident goon has been a revolving-door since in recent years. Perhaps Downey will stick around for a while. I haven't seen him fight yet, but he is a good locker-room quote.

considering the state of the blueline, yeah I'd lock him up long term too, but 5 years is perhaps too long. We don't want the big Russian to get lazy now. 3 years, $8-10million might be better.

What about Boullion, how much is he making this year? My favorite checker after Begin.

Aside from the obvious, that you aren't allowed to re-negotiate contracts under the CBA, Steve Begin is a 4th line player with limited skill. Ton of heart and grit, and would gladly stop a slapshot with his face, but that's what 4th liners make. Of course Radek Bonk is the exception to that rule. But you don't go around inflating your own player's contracts when you don't have to.

I think they should try and get Begin to sign a longer term contract (2-3 years) at a slightly higher price tag (~$750,000) instead of just picking up the team option. The start of this year for Begin was probably an offensive abberation but he continues to be a valuable player even though his scoring has fallen off.

I'd also go with Begin, Higgins, Plecks, Markov, Bouillon... maybe Komisarek if he keeps on playing big like he's doing these days... maybe in 2 years from now

Steve Begin DOES deserve a raise. Even if he's a 4th liner, normally you make the lines for the offensive skills and talent... thtat's why he's a 4th liner. But, because he gives himself everynight, because he LOVES to play in Montreal, because he is PROUD to be a Hab, because he is NEVER scared to dive and block a shot, because of his GREAT work for killing time at the end of a game and in PK, those are all good reasons for the Habs to give him a raise at the en of the season, at least 850K per year.

Higgins also deserves a big raise. He helps in defense just as much as in defense, and he's the kind of player every team's looking for. Give him a raise, and it's gonna be perfect.
