I'm someone who thinks there should only be 2-3 puck movers on D, along with 3-4 solid defensive defenseman.
You want to know the best way to get pinned in the defensive zone? Have a defense that can't move the puck.
Carlson and Orlov as the only puck movers is a terrible idea. Hamrlik's not a puck mover.
And do you want to know how pathetic the puck mover UFA market is? After Suter, Wideman might the best there is. Kuba, Corvo, and Carle are pretty much the only others available.
Now, a trade that might make sense is something around Green for Streit or Enstrom. I could get behind either one of those.

Just take a look at the Capitals entry into the offensive zone on PPs. Unless Backstrom or Green is carrying the puck the team usually has difficulties and instead of possession they try to dump and chase it.
MAJO's is the third good puck mover on PPs but he's not in the same company with Backstrom and Green just yet.
Caps need to keep Green but I do see Orlov eventually becoming the other good puck handler. Sorry but I don't see Carlson becoming the puck handler that Mike Green is or that Orlov will be.
Agree, I don't see that as a possibility for this team. That's why would like to see the Caps pry Fedor Tyutin away from Columbus and pair him with Orlov. Next season could look something like:
i expect mcphee to go after suter if he is on the ufa market. i think he stays in nashville, but if he doesnt then i expect mcphee to take a shot. that and signing him are two different things.
it will be interesting to see what he signs for and to see how many here would have gone bigger in order to get him.

Yes Wideman has sucked. But he's still a vet and has the poise/confidence to make up for it this game. It would not shock me at all for him to come up big and show us the "good" parts of his game that he has displayed before.
Orlov is greener than Alzner was that year in terms of NA exposure. Don't force feed your youth. Orlov isn't ready...just like he wasn't ready for his shootout attempt. He will be too excited in my mind.

orlov is not playing because hunter doesnt want a rookie in the lineup. he also doesnt want his defense stepping out of position to make a play. that includes stepping up for a hit.
clearly if hunter wanted wideman to play minutes like he did in game 6, there was no chance he was going to be traded for a draft pick
Overpaid and not particularly good even when you factor all of his defensive and hockey IQ intangibles. I'm not convinced he'd be better than Plekanec even at the same pricetag let alone for 1.6 mil more.
If he's really cheap I'd be for it, but since he's a "#1 center" he wouldn't be cheap.
Just look at how Richards is working out NYR. Stastny would be worse of us IMO.
there is a difference between alzner being put in the lineup for a game 7 where montreal was playing rope a dope and the puck was in their end 75% of the game and orlov going in when the caps are playing rope a dope and the puck is in their end all the time.
