Sounds like his play in Worcester netted him the contract now.

Sharks sign D Dylan DeMelo (2011 draftee) to ELS

http://sharks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=628809

As per club policy, terms were not released. I expect we'll see something up on CapGeek shortly though.

DeMelo posted 47 points (7G, 40A) and 70 penalty minutes in 67 OHL games with the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors this past season. He also appeared in all 6 Mississauga playoff games, notching a goal and an assist along with 13 PIMs while his team was defeated in the first round by Barrie.

It's worth mentioning that if I'm right, DeMelo will be the only contract the team has for next season that will be potentially exempt from counting against the 50-man reserve limit.

Abeltshauser is 19 right now, but his 20th birthday is on September 2, so by letter of the CBA he counts as having signed this contract at 20 (the CBA considers the age at which you sign the deal to be the age you are as of September 15 of that year. It doesn't matter that he signed the deal in April and being 19 at the time, because when Sept 15 rolls around, he'll have been 20 for just about 2 full weeks, and that means that in the eyes of the NHL and the NHLPA he was 20 for the purposes of signing the contract.

Yeah, it's kind of weird.

Nice to get a player from last years draft, in the 6th round already under contract and playing in the AHL. Looks like a good job on that pick.

He wasn't very impressive here in Worcester, but as we like to say here: "he's not ripe yet"...

He'll be back in juniors next season...he's not old enough for regular AHL duty

Unofficially Capgeek lists the DeMelo contract as 3 years with an annual cap hit of $658,333 and $75,000 in potential bonuses.

Furthermore DeMelo will have a year of slidability on the contract, so provided he doesn't miraculously crack the Sharks in the 2012 training camp, the deal will actually be the equivalent of a 4-year deal covering 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, and 2015-16.
