Why Backlund?

Why was backlund chosen to be a candidate over kipper, or iggy ???(maybe even joker, and tangs)

does management have something to do with this? if they do is it to boost Backlund's confidence?

No idea. I was thinking Kipper, Iggy or if you want a young player why not Baertschi?

Choosing to go with the younger group I guess

Or it's just because maybe neither Kipper nor Iggy will wear a Flames jersey to start the season

I think they'll try out Backlund with Baertschi for sure since they had some chemistry last pre-season.

But if that doesnt work out, then....

people place way too much stock in pre-season. Chuck Kobasew once dominated the pre-season.

Backlund is soft and has yet to prove he has any offensive ability at the NHL level, since he has "potential" he is the perfect ad don to a bigger deal or maybe to move up a few spots in the draft.

Simply to avoid putting the "EA Curse" on Kipper or Iginla.

Right?

It's funny because it's probably true.

EA Vancouver did it to mock the team.

I voted for Stajan, myself.

You'd get rid of the team's best defensive centre (and youngest viable NHL centre) for the opportunity to increase the team's chance to draft an NHL player by a few percentage points?

While some do overrate him I feel you underrate him. He had a terrible season and was derailed by injuries but the year before put up 25 points mostly playing on the fourth line as a 22 year old.

I'd love to see an argument for Olli "pinned in the d-zone" Jokinen, Matt "champ" Stajan, or Roman "AHL" Horak over Backlund. He was buried in a checking role by Sutter and ended up as the only centre with a positive shot differential aside from Blair Jones (who was also pretty solid defensively, but spent a lot of time against bottom six players to begin with, and wasn't quite as good positionally).

I honestly can't believe that you actually watched Backlund play given the way you constantly underrate him.

underrate him? i never said he wasn't decent defensively. but saying he is the best at anything is complete and utter ********.

why do people not remember history properly? the year before he played most of the year on the 3rd line, maybe a 3rd on the 4th line and a few weeks on the top line.

Backlund being mostly a 4th liner last season is one of the greatest myths Flames fans spread

It's ok he is still young! My hope is that he just hasn't really had the player types to compliment his play style.

He had the 4th least ES ice time among regular centers, while seeing less pp time then all centers and saw the 2nd most pk time of the regular centers. While it is true he played as much with Iginla as TKO and Jackman it took him twice as long to get that much ice time. The majority of the games he was on the 4th line and/or given little offensive opportunity, 25 points is nothing to laugh at.

I'm not saying he's best in the league; I'm saying he's best on the team (of the centres, at least). I honestly don't see an argument for any of the other Cs over Backlund. Now if you want to say that Moss or Glencross are better defensive forwards, that's a statement I wouldn't dismiss.

He really does have to adapt his playstyle in the offensive zone. He's too cautious (not as bad as he used to be, but there's still a ways to go).

They can't choose Iginla because of this:

Kipper is really the only other person that would make sense, not sure why Backlund would be there.

Same. I'm not sure why people are so quick to throw him under the bus, he is only 23. I'd rather keep him and have him not pan out than trade him somewhere and watch him become to player we all wanted him to be.

You're dead wrong. Backlund spent most of the year on the 4th line. It's just a fact. He played the end of that year on the first line. Never did he play on the third line.
