Its about time, his time as a shark has been way overdue
Can't be a Sharks thread around here w/o you showing up and doing what you do.
All he said is we'll cross that bridge if it ever comes up. He never said he would or wouldn't and with DW as GM, I wouldn't get my hopes up about it ever coming up.
Despite not showing up in the playoffs this year, I have no problem keeping Patrick Marleau on the Sharks. Great skater, good defensive player, and he's scored as many goals over the last few years as all but a few.
If we can get fair value for him I wouldn't mind, but selling low on him would be a mistake.
6.9 mil and how many points did he have in the playoffs?
To be fair, we only played 5 games, and we only scored 8 goals in 5 games total. Yes he should have got on the board somehow, but the system the Sharks were playing was absolutely pathetic (as noted by many, many analysts) and Marleau seemed to be one of the guys most effected by this.
Historically he's been one of our best playoff guys, this year it's tough to blame any individual player when the coach clearly had no idea how to counter the Blues system.
People are still judging salaries based on the post lockout cap. He may be a little overpaid but a guy like Parise will get more as an UFA and he hasn't had same the consistency or durability.
I would definitely take Marleau on the Habs. Consistently one of the most underrated guys on HF.
Patrick Marleau is absolutely worth $6.9M. He's surpassed 70 points in 5 of the last 7 seasons. How many guys with more expensive Cap hits have that kid of consistent production?
Nash, Lecavalier, Gaborik, and Gomez (obviously) don't.
It's ridiculous how underrated Marleau is. Any team would be lucky to have him, and I personally think he should stay on the Sharks. He's not their problem.

I agree. The Sharks have problems but Marleau isn't one of them.
Please waive Patty - You'd be a perfect fit & we'd love to have you in Buffalo!!!
To
LW Thomas Vanek ($7.143M)
C Derek Roy ($4M)
2012 1st RND pick (NSH)
2012 2nd RND pick (BUF)
To
LW Patrick Marleau ($6.9M)
C/W Joe Pavelski ($4M)
Please???
Not interested.
We trade Patty it will be for VERY high picks and top prospects, not veteran players and high first rounders.
Otherwise why do it? Vanek and Roy do not make us better. We are not rebuilding (that's been made clear). Frankly, unless someone wants him desperatly enough to send a top-5 1st back, I wouldn't even consider it. Patty, as others have said above, is not the problem. His year is a symptom of terrible coaching and a terrible system.
Marleau is not putting up monster stats in Buffalo.
Thornton's not coming with him.
Patty has put up very consistent numbers with and without Thornton. He has very little to do with Patty's success. Way to perpetuate a continuously disproven falicy though.
We don't want Connoly, that's a terrible, terrible offer.
Injured player, 2nd pairing defensemen and a 3rd for an elite center/LW?
Seriously, we don't need or want to trade Marleau. If it were to happen, it's because DW got blown away. Marleau is NOT the problem, never has been. We are not trying to dump the guy.
You want a dump? We have a lightly used Handzus available.

Marleau is definitely overpaid, but there are two points to consider.
1. Trading him will not make the sharks better now or in the future
2. He is generally one of the better playoff guys on the team, obviously not always, but he has had great PO moments too.
Also he is the only guy who I think has a chance to retire a lifetime shark, and he probably would if that were his choice.
I say let him play out the contract, but then try to resign him for cheap. I just don't like trading away the most important player in the history of your franchise as some knee-jerk move to allocate 1.5 million extra of capspace somewhere else.
I've been a huge critic of Marleau before, but anyone can just come here and say "OMG he sux trd his a$s!!1!"
Sorry to blow your mind, but it's not that simple.

He is not a center man any more and I don't thik he is elite but he is a first line forward and that package is terrible.
You mean like when he got 83 points just two seasons ago?
Henrik Sedin is elite because he posts 100+ points right? Even though he doesn't play crap for defense and plays HUGELY sheltered minutes?
Marleau is an elite forward. Not in the Crosby/Malkin tier, but definitely in the group below that.
He plays center fairly regularly still, just LW more because we have too many centers.
He plays center less than half the time I would classify him as a winger. To each there own I would like to have him on the flames but we don't have the assets for him.
