Lit Nets?

I was listening to the radio in Ottawa and they were talking to the creator of Lit nets. Tonight in the Ottawa 67's game they are going to try it.

What will happen is when a goal is scored the goal judge will press a button and embedded LED's will light up the whole net. It's supposed to make it more exciting when a goal is scored.

The creator would hope eventually it will be in the NHL and has had talks with NHL exectutives.

Your thoughts.

I think it's exciting enough when a goal is scored myself. Anyway, do they plan to do this for both home and away teams?

LED's are basically little plastic beads with a silicon wafer embedded inside. They're extremely durable. I mean, you could bust them if you put them on a hard surface and hit them with a hammer, but otherwise I doubt you'd have much luck. They'll just bounce out of the way if something hits them.

Pretty stupid IMO.

The last thing that needs fixing in this game is the post-goal ceremony.

Kinda rubs it in the goalie's face don't you think? I can just imagine someone like Belfour sprawled on his back in the crease right after trying to make a save, and seeing all these lights blinking in his face. He'd probably go postal and start smashing the net.

i thought they were gonna get the leds to light up when the sensored puck crosses the goal line.

but i see no point of implementing it in the NHL if its gonna be the goal judge pushing a button to light the net up. its not gonna be much different than the current setup with the lamps behind the nets.

Well, the Flames don't need it. We've got the massive flame bursts after a goal. Last thing we need is some glowing nets.

That would be swell for juniors and all that, but I don't think it'd fly in the pros.

I don't have a link for it I just heard a interview on the team 1200 in Ottawa.

A little more Info I found on the 67's Website that there will be 1300 LED's in each goalpost.

Their Website is here LITNETS

It also has a demonstration of it.

If this goes for as little as one game in the NHL I'll kill myself.

when they light up, there should be in choir vocals -
a goal was scored.. a goal was scored.. thank the lord, a goal was scored

and it should have a christmas kind of tune to it..

I'm sure the game lost a lot of integrity when they first implemented the siren and upgraded from scoreboards to jumbotrons, too. I mean, those people in Calgary shooting off flames...what in the world are they thinking?

i agree with that, i think all those huuuuge goal celebrations are ridiculous too.. but glowing nets takes the cake...

what purpose does it serve? other then something else to draw people for the wrong reasons..

What purpose does it serve? You're right, not much...but is it going to significantly hurt the game? Of course not. People can complain about anything. Folks whined when they started putting up advertisements on the boards, logos at center ice, replacing organ music with popular rock songs.

Look, the LEDs won't likely make the game anymore attractive. However, in my opinion it a neat, albeit cheap, gimmick.

Needs a little more choreography. Just flashing isn't impressive enough. Some chasing marquee type lights, that sort of thing.
